Advanced English A course will be given in Advanced E ngli sh ; that is, in li tera ry and plat fo rm E ngli h. T he students will be taught by lectu res, books and by actual pract ice not merely to speak gram­ matically but to speak logically, fo rcefully and convinci ngly, to speak so as to obtai n results. In thi s course the students will be trained to express t hemselves, both in wri ting and in speaking, cl ea rly, accurately, fo rcef ull y and attracti vely; but clearness, accuracy and vigo r of express ion will be emphas ized rathe r t han beauty of express ion. The students will be con­ stantly wa rned aga inst adopting so ornate and fascinating a style that people will lose t he t hought in their admirat ion for the words in which t he thought is exp ressed. T hey will be taught how to acquire a la rge, varied and choice vocabula ry, and to express themselves in telling phrases and incisive sen­ tences that will fas ten themselves in the memo ry, and t hus fi x the truth. T hey will al so be shown the proper a rrangenient of words and clauses in a sP.ntence in order t o prnduce the best effect . 9. Gretk and Hebrew 'vVe a re persuaded t hat a thorough knowledge of New Testament Greek is of great value to the mini ster of t he Gospel, and that a thorough knowledge of I-iebrew is of con­ siderable value ; but at the same time we a re convinced by long observat ion that a mere smatte ring of Greek or Hebrew is worse than no knowledge at all of these languages . Many of our seminari es, even t hose connected wi t h uni ve rsit;es that have the hi ()'hest scholarly rating, a re no longer requiring either Greek or Hebrew as a condi t ion of graduat ion or of taking t he B. D. degree. T here will be no attempt in the course at t he Insti tute to teach the rudiments of Greek, nor the rudiments of Hebrew. I f one has not a considerabl e knowledge of Greek before coming to the Inst itute, any knowledge that he could get in a three yea r course here, or anywhere else, would be of
