Phonetics. Two hours a week, Second Semeste r , Fou rth Year. This subject dea ls with the sc ience of the art icul ate sounds o f human speech. The sound s of Engl ish speech are first ana lyzed, th en the speech sound s peculiar to mi ss ion lan ds are in vestigated a nd a nalyzed. Th e s tud ent is taught how to classify unfamiliar speech sounds in order that they may be accurat ely reprod uced and prope r ly reco rded. No study is of mo re vita l importance to the missi ona ry cand idate fo r fo reign service than to master the cou r se in Phonetics. 843-4. History of Christ ian Missions. Tropica l Diseases. One hour a week, Second Semes te r. The textbook is Man so n's "Tropical Di seases." Th e cou rse includes the cause, symptoms and treatment of the commo n trop ica l di seases, as cholera, dysentery, ma laria, plague, ye ll ow fever, hook worm di seases, leprosy, etc. M845-6. D entistry. One hour per week thr oughout th e Ycar. The general anatomy of the upper and lower jaw, with path ologica l conditi ons of th e gums and tee th , is fu ll y explained . T he hygiene o f the mouth is emphasized. T he ex traction and simpl e fillin g of teeth is taugh t. M846. Constitutional Diseases. Two hour s a week, Second Semester.
