Ways to Shrink Your To-Do List Today Decision Fatigue Is Real

Wrongful Death Serious Injury Trucking Accidents Auto/Motorcycle Accidents Drunk Driving Accidents Pedestrian Accidents Giving your pain a voice.

Have you ever gotten to the point where you feel like a million fires are burning and you can’t put them all out? It’s a sea of emails, cases, clients, staff, family, or just life, and sometimes you have too many choices to make any. You start putting things off, and suddenly the stuff you didn’t do first spirals into a problem. It can turn into something even worse, a feeling you’re letting everyone down. You’re not incapable of making decisions, but you’re maxed out. With Thanksgiving right around the corner, this month is a time to slow down and reflect on family and feasts, but it’s also a season of decisions, from meal planning to wrapping up the year. We face countless daily choices that can drain our energy, and the key to avoiding decision burnout is to prioritize what matters, delegate what you can, and savor the moments that actually count. As a lawyer, you often experience compassion fatigue. You’re there because you want to solve people’s problems, but eventually, they fall outside your scope of representation. That compassion fatigue makes you feel like you’re letting everyone down: your wife, kids, clients, and anyone else you care about.

Decision fatigue can cause you to spiral just the same. If you have too many decisions to make but don’t, it gets worse. One saying goes: You don’t rise to the level of your expectations, you fall to the level of your systems. Basically, you’re going to encounter setbacks, but how far you fall depends on how well you set up your systems to run without your involvement. Naval Ravikant is an entrepreneur and investor whose profound tweets were compiled into a book of wisdom called “The Almanack of Naval Ravikant.” One of the things he talks about is leverage, when your input gets you further than a one-to-one ratio. Think of digging a hole. When two people or a team are digging, you leverage labor for bigger results. You can also leverage money and technology. Through all these forms of leverage, you don’t have to do everything alone. Your body and capabilities limit you, so you need tools to help accomplish your tasks and not drown in the decisions. Author Tim Ferriss suggests that when making decisions, list the top five impactful things you could do and work on three. Block out a few hours to get one done, and if it’s high-impact enough, it will make the other things irrelevant, shrinking your decision list. Eliminate the distractions. Part of it is being more selective about what you put your energy into. As an attorney, I know I could get winning results for

The hum of a busy coffee shop, traffic outside, your favorite song through your headphones as you work — we live in a noisy world with constant background noise. But is that ambient buzz boosting your brainpower or creating static in the system? While some swear a little noise helps them focus, for others, every passing siren or side conversation is a distraction. Let’s tune in and find out if that background noise could be a productivity playlist or sound sabotage. Brain Beats Your brain is always busy trying to filter out distractions, and how background noise impacts your noggin depends on what it is. Steady or Is Your Work Playlist Helping or Hurting Your Focus? SOUND ADVICE

low-level sounds, like raindrops or white noise, can help hide other intrusive interruptions, making it easier to focus on the task you’re working on. Irregular, sudden, surprise, or meaningful sounds, like a direct conversation, notifications on your phone, or lyrics to a beloved song, activate your brain, pulling you out of the concentration zone. Sound Support If you are working on something that requires light focus, like answering emails, then the right kind of background noise, something like instrumental music, can help you stay on track. Other beneficial times for background noise include working in a loud environment or letting low-level sounds shift your brain into creative or problem- solving mode. The key is choosing something that won’t distract your mind from what you’re trying to focus on. Cue the Quiet Noise most often gets in the way of more complex or challenging work, such as reading, writing, meetings, learning new skills, or finding solutions to issues. Deeper tasks require more brainpower, like using memory or vocabulary skills. When your brain engages in more concentrated tasks, it is more sensitive to interruptions, so a song lyric or burst of action on the TV can win out against the quieter goal you’re trying to accomplish. Background noise can be a sound decision or just more racket. The trick is tuning into what helps your mind focus without being carried away by the clatter.

Facts Aren’t Always Enough

Expert Witnesses Strengthen Your Story in Court

When it comes to personal injury cases, the facts alone aren’t always enough. Sometimes, you need an expert to help make that information clear, compelling, and credible. Expert witnesses, like doctors, psychologists, or other professionals in specific fields, play a crucial part in cases, clarifying complex issues for the judge and jury and ultimately helping determine the outcome. From showing the link between an accident and a victim’s injuries to quantifying economic and non-economic damages, here’s how these skilled witnesses can help strengthen your case. Explaining Technical Details One of the most important jobs of an expert witness in a case is to explain technical or complicated information that the average person, like most jurors, doesn’t have direct knowledge or experience with. Medical professionals, like doctors or nurses, often

testify in personal injury cases to explain the severity of injuries, required treatment, and long-term impacts. Their professional wisdom can illuminate causation and ultimately help show who is at fault or liable. Calculating Damages Expert witnesses are also able to assist in calculating economic and non- economic damages. If you are trying to get compensation for medical costs, lost wages, pain and suffering, or reduced earning capability, a professional can show why that amount of money is needed for someone to heal and move forward. They help to quantify those figures and are especially helpful for costs that may not be immediately apparent. A medical professional, for example, can analyze how an injury will impact someone years later based on their age, career, lifestyle, and the injuries themselves. Their testimony ensures

that realistic projections are at the base of determining compensation. Establishing Credibility While the human story and eyewitness

accounts of what occurred during an accident are critical, bringing in

professionals with unbiased opinions helps give more credibility to your claims. Expert witnesses make it more difficult for the opposition to poke holes or undermine your arguments. They help to prove your case and the compensation you’re fighting for are fact-based and aren’t numbers you pulled out of thin air. At Barry Trial Practice & Resolution, we know how vital expert testimony is in protecting your rights and ensuring you receive the compensation you deserve to move forward. every potential case, but I can’t possibly take them all on. You’ll burn yourself out if you try, so you have to show some restraint in what you choose to take on. Ferriss says to wake up an hour before you need to, make a cup of tea, sit down with a pencil, and write down 3–5 things making you anxious or uncomfortable. They’re often the tasks that get punted from one day’s to-do list to the next. Then, ask yourself, would you be satisfied if that were the only thing you accomplished in a day? It allows you to move to the next to-do or choice. Ultimately, getting past the decision fatigue comes down to protecting your energy and being intentional with your actions. Reimagine Your Routine Establishing new routines adds a sense of comfort and control. A consistent morning routine, complete with your favorite breakfast and a bit of movement, can kick- start your day with energy and intention. End your day with a relaxing ritual to wind down, reflect, or connect with loved ones. Keep It Fresh Avoid falling into autopilot mode. Challenge yourself to try something new regularly, whether exploring a new walking path, attending a local workshop, or picking up a new skill. Your retirement life should be anything but dull. This is your time to thrive!

Retirement is a well-earned chapter in life, but transitioning to it can feel like stepping into the unknown. After decades of routines built around work, it’s easy to feel adrift. Fortunately, structure can go a long way in finding your freedom. Start With Purpose Waking up with something to look forward to is one of the simplest ways to infuse your day with purpose. Whether it’s reading the newspaper, taking a morning walk, or working toward a long-held dream, these purposeful starts add rhythm to your day. Set small goals that excite you: Learn a new hobby, volunteer in your community, or dive into a creative project you’ve always wanted to try. Learning and progress feel good at any age. Balance Planning With Play Planning isn’t about creating a rigid schedule; it’s about sprinkling your calendar with things you love. Doctor appointments and errands can sit comfortably beside lunch dates, gardening time, or a painting session. Mix the predictable with the spontaneous. After all, retirement is your time, so make it flexible and fun.
