SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON HELPS Homer A. Kent, Th.D. • Allison Arrowood (children) Lesson material is based upon outlines of the International Sunday School lessons copyrighted by the Division of Christian Education of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the United States of America. Jan. 3, 1954 God Revealed in Christ John 1:14-23,29-36 Pointers on the Lesson we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins" (1 John 4:10).

The Holy Spirit used John, the beloved disciple, to write one of the four Gospels in our New Testament. John tells us that he wrote his Gospel “ that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name” (John 20:31). John did not write about the birth and childhood of God’s Son, but he did tell us that the Lord Jesus was in heaven before His birth and that He is God. Another man named John was sent by God to announce the coming of the Sav iour to the people. The Lord Jesus came to this John to be baptized before He be gan the work for which His Father had sent Him into the world. As the Saviour came up out of the water, God said, “ This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” Because John believed that Je sus was truly the Son of God, he invited others to follow the Saviour. As each one became a follower of Jesus, he was eager to invite others to become acquainted with his Lord also. Read John 1:35-51 to see how many followers invited their friends and relatives to join them as disciples of God’s Son. Today when anyone truly knows the Lord Jesus Christ as personal Saviour, that one is eager to tell others of Him. If you have never invited another to be come a Christian, pray that you will love your Lord so much that you will want to tell everyone you meet that He can save them and satisfy them. Jan. 10, 1954 Jesus Uses His Authority John 2:13-25 Pointers on the Lesson In the passage before us today we see Jesus working in harmony with His di vine Sonship. If He is the Son of God, He has the right to exercise authority. He exercises that authority. If He is the Son of God, He will have power to work miracles. In this passage we hear Him making a prediction concerning His resur rection from the dead. In all respects the Saviour acts in accordance with His deity. Using Authority in the Temple vv. 13-17 It was Passover time in Jerusalem. This was one of the three greatest times of celebration in the Jewish calendar. Mul titudes of people made their way there for the occasion. As the Passover season was a time for special sacrifices, there prevailed much buying and selling of fit animals for the sacrificial offerings. So far there is nothing wrong. But when Jesus arrived at the temple His indigna tion was aroused as He found that the buying and selling and the money-chang ing incidental to it had entered into the sanctuary of worship. During the first quarter of 1954 we will be studying the Gospel of John. The sec ond quarter our attention will be turned to a study of the Northern Kingdom and its prophets in the Old Testament. This will be followed in the third quarter by a series entitled “ Growth in Christian Living.” In the final quarter the study will center around the theme, “Wisdom and Worship in Old Testament Litera ture.” God Moving Into Our Humanity vv. 14-23 Christ is here referred to by the term Word. As a word is an expression of thought, so the Word, Christ Jesus, is God expressing Himself in grace. Christ came and dwelt or tabernacled among us. The word used here in the Greek is the word for tent or tabernacle. As the tabernacle dwelt in the midst of the. host of Israel in the desert, so Christ came to live and minister to His people; In a real sense He Still ministers among us. John witnessed to His glory and grace (15-17). He sets forth a remarkable truth in verse 18, namely, that it took the Lord Jesus Christ to make visible the invisible God. In the words following in this section, John makes clear to the inquiring Jews just who he is in relation to the Son of God (19-23). He is but a voice to speak in behalf of Him who has come for our sal vation. This is what we all should be— voices bearing witness to the Saviour. John Pointing Men to Their Supreme Duty vv. 29-36 On two occasions in this section John calls upon his hearers to “ Behold the Lamb of God” (w . 29,36). The teacher should stress at this point the significance of the Lamb in the Scriptures from Gen esis to Revelation. It speaks of innocence and sacrifice. The Lord Jesus Christ, the holy Son erf God, has, come “to take away the sin of the world,” Men need to see Him in saving faith. There is nothing they need to do so much as this. John had witnessed the baptism of Christ and its attendant heavenly manifestations (w . 32,33), and John knew beyond a perad- venture of a doubt that He was “ the Son of God” (v. 34). Only one who is deity is able to save. Jesus qualifies so: Fix your eyes upon Jesus, Look full in His wonderful face, And the things of earth will grow strangely dim In the light of His glory and grace. Helps for the Children Jesus' First Followers John 1:19-51; 20:30, 31 Memory Verse: "Herein is love, not that
