S U N D A Y S C H O O L continued Christ— “We have heard him ourselves.” No one can get to heaven on the experi ence of others. The witness of others has its important place, but saving faith comes as a result of a person’s personal relationship to Christ. Have you met Him face to face? Helps For the Children A Talk Beside a Well John 4:1-42 Memory Verse: "This is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world" (John 4:42b). When the Lord Jesus was upon the earth the Jewish people and the Samari tans hated one another. When a Jew wanted to travel from southern to north ern Palestine, he went around the land of Samaria which separated the two. One day the Saviour and His disciples planned to make this journey. They did an unheard of thing by going through the land of Samaria rather than walking around it. The Son of God who knew all things knew that a certain Samaritan woman needed His help. As the Saviour rested at a well in the land of Samaria this woman came to draw water. She came at noon when the others were at home because she was a sinful woman whom others disliked. The Saviour sur prised the woman by asking her for a drink, for the Jews did not speak to the Samaritans. The Lord Jesus lo v in g ly talked with the woman about her sinful life and her need for a Saviour. Quickly the woman wanted to share with the oth ers in her village the message of God’s Son. The people begged Jesus to tell them more about God. For two days He re mained in their village and told others that He was the Son of God. By going through Samaria and telling the people about their need for salvation, the Lord Jesus showed us that His mes sage of life is for all races. God desires all people to know .that “this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world.” Jan. 31, 1954 Faith That Makes Whole John 5:2-18 Pointers on the Lesson John 5 sets before us one of the eight signs or miracles of John’s Gospel. In these miracles God was bearing witness to the deity of Christ and fulfilling the plain purpose as stated in chapter 20:30 and 31: “ Many other signs truly did Je sus . . . But these are written that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.” The Place of Mercy vv. 2-4 The name of the pool, Bethesda, means the house of mercy. It is significant to note that when Jesus came to Jerusalem upon this occasion, He went to this place. He was always the man of compassion and acquainted with grief. At Bethesda were the impotent ones waiting the mov ing of the waters. It must have been a pathetic sight and yet the situation was not sadder than the plight of multitudes of impotent folk, who are all about us, waiting for the moving of the water of THE KING'S BUSINESS
