Central Package & Display: 65 Years and Growing Strong BY STEVE YOUNG In order to get somewhere, you have to be somewhere first. Jim Ha- glund, Chairman of Central Package & Display in Minneapolis, has har- nessed this homespun philosophy throughout his 65-year career in the corrugated and paperboard packaging business. “I always wanted to go where most other companies did not want to go,” he says. “I always wanted to put a toe in the water somewhere else. That’s what has served us to this day.”

Tyoga Container Welcomes Senator Yaw To Newly Expanded Facility Pennsylvania Sen. Gene Yaw (R-23) recently visited Tioga County’s Tyoga Container facility to discuss its $30 mil- lion expansion. Tyoga Container, a corrugated box man- ufacturing plant, was recently awarded $1.5 million in the state’s 2023-24 budget for the project. “The team from Tyoga Container has a proven track record in the manufacturing industry,” Yaw said. “This multi-generational company brings good paying jobs to Tyoga County and creates substantial economic benefits for our region. I was proud to have advocated for this fund- ing and I’m looking forward to their continued progress.” Earlier this year, Tyoga Container introduced the com- munity to its completely redesigned facility, marking the
largest expansion in the company’s history. The renovation took two years to complete and included 126,000 square feet of factory space and 18,000 square feet of office space. The new space, which now totals nearly 264,000
square feet, houses corporate offices and customer service representatives, a de- sign lab and employee breakrooms. The plant floor is now home to five new state- of-the-art corrugated converting lines, ink kitchen, pre-production space, in-plant training facilities and supervisor offices. “Through the support of local and state officials including Sen. Gene Yaw, State Rep. Clint Owlett and former Tioga County Commissioner Erick Coolidge, we redesigned our entire facility for optimal throughput while installing a total of five new corrugated converting lines,” said Chris Morral, Tyoga Container Executive Vice President. “With the completion of this project we now have nearly 180 em- ployees and are in the upper echelon of sheet plants throughout the country in terms of overall capacity and capabilities.” The site expansion focused on two things: installing new machinery and ex- panding capacity. With a bigger space and state-of-the-art machines, the company said it can better meet our customer de- mands. The new machines give us the abil- ity to create more packaging features, and the increased production area helps them deal with demand fluctuations. Machines added at the site include a Baysek Flat Bed Die Cutter, a 28-inch and 38-inch Macarbox Four-Color Print Flexo Folder Gluer, and 66-inch Macarbox Rotary Die Cutter. “With these high-tech machines at our disposal, we can quickly meet a vari- ety of challenging packaging needs. Many of these machines are also equipped with automation technology, which further in- creases our efficiency during the packag- ing creating process,” the company said.

AF&PA: Container Board Production Up 3 Percent In Third Quarter The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) re- leased the Q3 2024 Containerboard Quarterly report on October 25. According to the report, total Container- board production in Q3 increased 3 percent compared to Q3 2023. It was up 6 percent when compared to the same nine months of 2023. Operating rates for all major grades except Recycled Medium declined compared to Q2 2024, but total production was essentially the same between the two quarters. Production for export decreased nearly 15 percent from Q2 and was the lowest quarter so far in this year, but is still up more than 26 percent year-to-date due to the weak export numbers in the first half of 2023. Recycled Medium had a very strong quarter with pro- duction exceeding 1.9 million tons and the operating rate above 90 percent for the first time since Q2 2022. Semi- chemical Medium production on the other hand dipped below 1 million tons for the quarter due to particularly weak September numbers. New supply for Q3 increased 2.8 percent from Q2 and was the highest it has been since Q2 2022, with strong domestic production and imports indicating growing demand for containerboard stateside, compared to the slightly weaker exports.

Transpak Acquires Reid Packaging Of Peachtree Corners, Georgia San Jose, California based Transpak, a provider of custom packaging, crating, logistics, and design services, has ac- quired Peachtree Corners, Georgia based Reid Packaging, according to media reports. Reid Packaging has operated in the metro Atlanta region since 1982, providing custom packaging for mil- itary, aerospace, and high-value industries. Under the leadership of Ward Phillips, the company became one of the largest packaging companies in the region with a 60,000-square-foot facility. Transpak says it shares Reid Packaging’s commitment to craftsmanship, care and the people behind the work. “This partnership isn’t just about expansion; it’s about carrying forward the legacy of family businesses built on trust, hard work, and dedication to customers,” the com- pany said. Tomas Molet, Transpak’s Executive Vice President of East and Midwest Operations, said that Reid Packaging’s prime location in Peachtree Corners will allow them to serve customers throughout the southeast, including di- rect routes to the Carolinas and beyond. It also strength- ens their ability to meet the needs of existing clients in the semiconductor and renewable energy sectors. Molet said they retained all Reid Packaging employees.
The International Corrugated Packaging Foundation (ICPF) announced important changes to its Career Portal. After careful evaluation and conversations with current ca- reer portal users, ICPF has decided to transition to a new platform for advertising open industry positions that can be embedded directly onto ICPF’s website. The current career portal will be discontinued on No- vember 15. In its place will be a new digital tool called So- ciableKIT, which will integrate with third-party platforms like LinkedIn and Indeed, eliminating the need to post jobs separately on www.careersincorrugated.com . Transitioning to this new feature will provide an im- proved user experience with an intuitive interface that keeps users on ICPF’s newly designed website and bet- ter integration with social media and other communication channels. With a streamlined application flow, this new ap- proach will also allow job seekers to apply directly through LinkedIn or a company’s internal ATS/API, simplifying the application process. ICPF President Caitlin Salaverria said they believe the transition will better support industry recruitment efforts, increase visibility for open positions in the corrugated packaging industry, and will create a smoother application process for students and job seekers.

Fastmarkets RISI Outlook Report Cautiously Optimistic For Folding Carton Demand Fastmarkets RISI recently released its 2024-25 Trends Industry Outlook & Market Data Report exclusively for the Paperboard Packaging Council (PPC), providing an in-depth analysis of the U.S. and Canadian folding carton markets. The report offers valuable insights into key trends shap- ing the industry, covering the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, infla- tion, and shifting consumer behaviors. The report highlights how the folding carton market experienced un- precedented growth during the pandemic. As lockdowns pushed con- sumers to spend more on goods rather than services, demand for folding with a 5.6 percent annual rise in shipments. However, as the world began returning to normal and consumers shifted their fo- cus back to services like dining and travel, inventory destocking followed. This led to a cooling in carton shipments, which fell by 2.4 percent in 2023. Despite this, the report forecasts that the fold- ing carton market will stabilize by the end of 2024, with shipments still expected to be 6.7 percent higher than pre-pandemic levels. The outlook for the coming years remains cautiously optimistic. Over the next five years, folding carton demand is expected to grow at an average annual rate of 1.1 percent, reaching 5.5 million tons by 2028. This growth will be driven by several key factors, including a rebound in nondurable goods production, which is forecasted to expand by 1.6 percent annually. Additionally, shifting consumer spending patterns, with increased demand for sustainable packaging solutions, will fuel this growth. In particular, consumers are increasingly favoring paperboard packaging over plastic alternatives due to environmental concerns, a trend that is expected to continue over the forecast period. The report also delves into the performance of specific end-use mar- kets for folding cartons. It identifies nine markets poised for notable growth, including food products, beverages, cosmetics, pharmaceuti- cals, and household supplies. These growth markets are expected to see more than 1 percent annual growth. In contrast, other markets, such as certain processed food categories, may face challenges due to chang- ing consumer preferences and cost pressures. Nevertheless, the report underscores that, overall, folding carton demand is likely to experience steady growth across most sectors. In the Canadian market, the report shows that folding carton ship- ments experienced three consecutive years of gains from 2020-22, driven largely by increased consumer spending and higher industrial production. However, 2023 saw a slight decline in shipments by 1.3 per- cent, largely due to slowing consumer spending in key sectors. Despite CONTINUED ON PAGE 14 cartons surged, particularly for nondurable goods. This result- ed in a significant 11.6 percent increase in shipments between 2019 and 2022. The peak occurred in 2022,

this, the value of Canadian carton shipments increased to C$1.47 billion, indicating resilience in the face of challeng- ing market conditions. However, a significant concern on the horizon is the planned closure of a major cartonboard mill in 2026, which will reduce Canada’s cartonboard ca- pacity by nearly 30 percent. This will have a noticeable im- pact on folding carton production, with shipments expected to decline slightly, at 0.6 percent annually, over the next five years. PPC Executive Director and VP Emily Leonczyk empha- sized the importance of adapting to evolving consumer needs and economic conditions. “As the economy stabiliz- es and sustainability becomes a key focus, the folding car- ton industry has a significant opportunity to innovate and grow. This report provides valuable data to help our mem- bers navigate these trends and continue to lead the way in packaging solutions,” said Leonczyk. BW Papersystems Marks Milestone With 200th Twin Box Slitter Sold Phillips, Wisconsin based BW Papersystems announced that Green Bay Packaging in Lebanon, Ohio, a corrugat- ed box manufacturer, has recently purchased the 200th Twin Box Slitter. This marks a significant milestone for the popular machine, recognized for its precision, efficiency, and contribution to optimizing box making production lines. The Twin Box Slitter has become an industry favorite for the versatility it brings to production by expanding the product range box makers can manufacture with a mid- size Flexo Folder Gluer. The Twin Box Slitter is a unique converting machine. The addition of a Twin Box Slitter enables box plants to double the production of Flexo Folder Gluers by running
two-up boxes. These boxes are slit by the Twin Box Slitter creating two boxes. Once the boxes are separated, they are ready to be bundled. This process allows manufactur- ers with a mid-sized Flexo Folder Gluer to efficiently create a wide range of corrugated box sizes from very small to large on one machine with the potential to double productivity at the same time.
DESIGNS THAT INCREASE PRODUCTION
Green Bay Packaging joins a growing list of companies that have enhanced their manufacturing processes by integrating this productivity equipment into their op- erations. BW Papersystems says it remains com- mitted to delivering innovative and reliable solutions to support the evolving needs of the corrugated box industry. Diamond Packaging Shares Environmental Data Rochester, New York based Diamond Packaging announced that it is taking a proactive step forward in its sustainability journey by participating in CDP’s new SME Climate Change disclosure questionnaire. By disclosing through CDP, Diamond says it is responding to the increasing demand for environmental transparency from its customers, stakeholders, and pol- icymakers. CDP is a global non-profit charity that operates disclosure system for investors, companies, cities, states, and regions to manage their environmental impacts. “This strategic initiative demonstrates our commitment to transparency while helping us identify and mitigate environ- mental risks and prepare for future regu- lations,” said Dennis Bacchetta, Director of Marketing and founding member of Di- amond’s Green Team. “By embracing this voluntary disclosure, we're not just com- plying with industry standards, we're lead- ing by example.”

I learned Minneapolis,” he says, “because when you’re from out of the area, you have to learn it numerically and alphabetically and not just from local landmarks.” Playing his strong suit, Haglund sold, first traveling for Federal Package, then going out on his own brokering boxes in the Twin Cities. It was during this time that he came to know Jerry Hinitz, Jack Persten, and Dick Page, who owned Central Container Corp., one of his regular suppliers. Haglund, knowing the company’s potential and learning of Persten’s impending retirement, offered to buy his half of the business. Persten demurred, however, saying he was committed to selling to his other partners. “Then around Christmastime, he called me back,” Haglund remembers. “He says his retirement is based on the com- pany succeeding. ‘I know you can do it and they can’t, so I’m going to sell you my half.’” The price, Haglund says, was quickly set: The book val- ue of the business was $238,000; half was $119,000. So, Persten and he agreed to $25,000 down with the balance over 11 years at 7 percent interest. “I says, ‘OK.’ The only problem was, I didn’t have $25,000!” Buying The Company It is a familiar memory for any successful entrepreneur: the scramble to raise that initial capital to start the busi- ness. For their part, the Haglunds—Jim and Kathy, his wife of 62 years—sold their house and pulled out $15,000 in equity. Haglund borrowed the remaining $10,000 from his CONTINUED ON PAGE 24
third-party logistics warehouse in Canada, with plans to open a second in Ireland. Early Years Jim Haglund’s career started in the sample shop of a Minneapolis printing company. The young Haglund, fresh
off the farm in northern Minnesota, assembled dummies of customers’ print jobs and delivered them throughout the city. Besides the benefit of a $250-a-month salary, Ha- glund says the job gave him the geographic bearings that would serve him well in his sales years ahead. “That’s how Mike Gallagher, left, joined Central Package & Display in 2014, allowing Mike Haglund to focus on his passion for leading sales efforts.
PRINTCHEK REPRESENTS A NEW FRONTIER IN PRINT QUALITY ASSURANCE FOR THE CORRUGATED CARDBOARD INDUSTRY PrintChek uses a series of line scan cameras to capture an image of each sheet across its entire span before being die-cut. Every sheet's size, rotation, and print quality are then compared to your set “golden standard” to identify defects as small as 2mm like skew, spots, hickeys, smears, color deviation, missing print, and more. Using PrintChek in conjunction with MeasurementChek allows you to remotely monitor production and quality statistics which you can then export via Excel for statistical analysis.

brother who did not give him a break. “I remember he charged me 7 percent interest over seven years,” Haglund says. Within five years, Haglund owned 100 percent of the company, buying out Hinitz and Page. At that time, the Minneapolis packaging market was changing dramatically, from an industrial base of brown box users to highly spe- cialized, technology-driven industries such as health care and medical equipment and instrumentation. In fact, that segment of the Minnesota economy grew so prolifically in the 1950s, ’60s, and ’70s that the Twin Cities area became to be known as “Medical Alley.” The growth of companies such as 3M, Medtronic, and Boston Scientific, aided by the University of Minnesota’s well-en- dowed medical research and development labs, created a demand for a highly specialized base of professional services and material suppliers. Against this backdrop, Haglund saw his early opportunities for investment and growth. “Selling is 50 percent personality,” he says. “If the customer likes you and you come in with a new product, you’ve got half the sale completed.” Growing And Acquiring Looking for those new product offerings for his cus- tomers, Haglund acquired two additional companies in the early ’80s: one, a local sheet plant, and the other, a

manufacturer of setup boxes, Fisher Paper Box. It was this latter acquisition that Haglund points to as the driver of the company’s new direction. “Because we now had Fish- er and they were in the folding carton business and the chipboard business, it led us to other industries,” he says. “It really was the foundation of our company today; it got us into the medical industry.” Calling on the spectrum of companies making up the Minnesota “medi-sphere,” Haglund and his team then rec- ognized that these customers frequently had other needs

such as foam and partitions. “My theory is that once you’re in front of the customer, you say, ‘What do you need? What aren’t you getting?’ And then they would say something, and we’d look into it and find a way to do it. … This in- cluded foam, partitions, and inserts—the things that inte- The company’s growth through the 1980s and early ’90s strained the company’s capacity at its existing loca- tion in Minneapolis. Haglund considered the need to im- prove efficiencies, quality, and service levels, and move to multi-graphics. Housed in a century-old building on Hi- awatha Avenue, an original industrial corridor in the city, Central’s operations were hampered by low ceilings, sup- port posts, production on different levels, and small dock doors, to name a few of the obstacles. The choices for Ha- glund and his team were to add onto the main plant, add onto an existing addition on the plant, move to an existing building, build a new building, or do nothing. The compa- ny’s growing volume in the cramped space was a serious drag on its efficiencies. Hence, the last option of “do noth- ing” was easily ruled out. The limitations of its existing lo- cation also made expansion or improvements impractical. “Never make future investment decisions based on the grateds didn’t want to run.” To Move Or Not To Move Austin Haglund, left, and his father, Mike, represent second and third generations of Haglunds to join the family business.

current economy,” Haglund tells his team. And in the case of Central’s future location, he took his own advice. The economic slump of the early ’90s gave Central a favorable build-to-suit environment of low interest rates, “hungry” contractors, and local communities competing for new businesses. Brooklyn Park offered an ideal location and attractive incentives. In March 1992, the first spade of dirt for Central Container Corp.’s new location on 85th Avenue North was turned. Haglund marked the event by inviting then-Minne- sota Gov. Jesse Ventura to attend the ceremony, and he did. The official ribbon cutting was held in November. Equipped For Quality And Precision Central Container Corp.’s new location, now 31 years young, is a showcase of efficiency. (Haglund is meticulous about maintaining the property.) The corrugated side of the business is equipped to support its diverse customer base of medical, high-tech manufacturing, food and bev- erage, retail distribution, and industrial companies. Three flexo folder-gluers from Latitude, TCY, and Ward form the standard box production line, with Eterna, Brausse, Apstar, and TCY rotary die cutters augmenting the mix. In addi- tion, Central’s specialty folder-gluers from Bobst, J&L, and Brausse, plus a Herrmann Ultrasonic welder, provide the capacity needed for the intricate designs demanded in medical and electronic instrumentation packaging. On the setup box side of the business, Central maintains an Em- meci automatic rigid box line. Haglund follows a simple equipment acquisition guide- line. “One thing I have always believed: reinvest, reinvest, reinvest,” he says. “We have always reinvested in equipment to improve quality. The medical industry has pushed us.” Haglund was an early adopter of converting and finish- ing equipment from Asia, buying his first TCY flexo fold- er-gluer from Taiwan 40 years ago. It was a decision, he says, made from necessity. “We were kind of pioneers,” he remembers. “Everyone was concerned about how do you get parts from Taiwan? But I could get a part from Tai- pei as fast as I could from New Jersey because Northwest Airlines had all these daily nonstop flights between Min- neapolis and Taipei. When I say it was a gamble, it really wasn’t. I didn’t have a choice. We couldn’t afford anything else at that time.” New Name, New Image By the early 2000s, the North American supply chain had taken on a new form—containerization—and the term “container” took on a meaning beyond a simple corrugat- ed, rigid box, or folding carton. Ocean and rail freight had co-opted “container,” Haglund felt, so he sought a new identity for his company. After some careful consideration and taking what Haglund calls “a poll of one,” Central Container Corp. became Central Package & Display. “I felt ‘container’ had too broad an implication,” Haglund says.
