INTERVIEW/ With CEO Remco Spreeuwers Why was 2Service founded? Ten years ago, 2Service was founded to help Samsung im- prove their parts distribution. At that time, Samsung had the ambition to conquer market share in the product categories TV, audio and video. Therefore, having a stable and profes- sional parts distributor was a must. Retailers and end users simply required high quality service from the manufacturer. One year later, Samsung presented their Galaxy smartphones to the market and we were allowed to purchase and distribute the mobile parts. That made our company grow explosively. The demand of mobile parts was so big, that it became our core-activity. Besides mobile parts, nowadays we still help Samsung with the distribution of brown- and white good parts throughout Europe with our webshop SamsungParts.eu. When was Mobileparts.shop established? From 2014, we started focussing on the mobile repair indus- try. We added some brands to our range, to not depend on Samsung only. This worked out really well! Nowadays, we also sell parts from 84 different brands all over Europe. Be- sides spare parts, we now also offer accessories, tools, devi- ces and services in our webshop Mobileparts.shop: the place for the professional repair engineer. We want the industry to grow so all repair shops will be future proof. Because the market is changing very fast.

How do you see the future of repair? The market is quickly changing. Lots of traditional telecom re- sellers start repairing and simple enough, repair shops start moving more towards retail. Manufacturers make it possible for consumers to do repairs and at the other hand, make repair more difficult due to serialization. In the U.S.A., the trend of telecom operators who are repairing in their own shops is increasing. Repair is a real client magnet. The biggest challenge today is that you need to get as many clients to your store as possible and convince them with extra products and services, besides your traditional repairs. Retailers are already sales specialists, but this is the moment for repair shops to change. We try to help the best we can by offering different kinds of services and also by helping to improve their sales skills. So with products, servi- ces and skills we aim to let repair shops grow, so they are ready for all that is coming. Times are changing! What advice would you give to repair shops? I do have some specific tips for the mobile repair professional: invest in a microscope with a camera included. Every shop should have one. A microscope gives you a better overview of the device to be repaired and offers a great shopping experience for your clients. For example: if you connect the microscope to a televi- sion in your shop, you can take the client into the repair task and show them how you fix their devices. Repairing with a microscope is safer, more professional and gives 100% transparency to your client. Start micro soldering. I believe that shops that are not micro solde- ring yet, are not well prepared for the future of mobile repair. Everybody can learn how to micro solder and as a L3 trained engi- neer, you will never have to say ‘no’ to a customer asking for a re- pair. This way, you can make optimal margin on all your repairs and you are able to distinguish yourself from other repair companies. Invest in a good POS system and automate as much as possible. Time is money and you do not want to waste your time. With a good POS system, you are even able to make and plan your social media posts in advance. Our sourcing team Our sourcing team is based in Shenzhen to make sure we supply the best quality parts. Shenzhen is home to lots of electronics markets. So, it is the place to go for the best qual- ity displays and small parts for iPhone. The team Our team in Shenzhen consists of thirteen employees. Sourc- ing manager Wen is responsible for purchasing, while the other twelve employees mainly inspect and check parts. The inspection process is rigorous, to make sure any ‘rotten apples’ get removed and our customers are guaranteed of the best possible quality.

“I started at Mobileparts.shop of 2Service as an administrative assistant. After a while, I moved to logistics. I set up a website in my spare time and imported iPhone parts from China to sell in the Netherlands. It enabled me to acquire experience in the Chinese electronics market. When Mobileparts.shop wanted to add parts for iPhones and iPads to its range, my father took on the sourcing process for this purpose. We speak the lan- guage and know the culture, which is a massive advantage. It makes the entire process easier for us to understand and enables us to respond efficiently to any developments. When I was still living in the Netherlands, my father used to manage the processes in Shenzhen. In December 2017,

I also check all new pro- ducts and maintain contact with current sup- pliers. We have special agreements with manu- facturers to make sure that we only get the best high-quality products. In addition, my team looks for new suppliers, performs quality checks, packs orders, keeps stock and takes care of the delivery of the goods.” Our sourcing process and the advantages we offer There are two types of sellers on the electronic market; firstly, the resellers, traders who buy screens from factories and resell them on the Shenzhen markets. The second type of sellers are the manufacturers themselves. About 90% of market exhibitors are resellers. Sourcing Manager Wen: “I always start chatting to find out if the market exhibitor is a reseller or a manufacturer. That means asking various questions about the refurbishment process and stocks, among other things. I can find out if someone is only reselling screens by asking simple questions about stocks and quality. If someone cannot give me a straight answer about their stocks for a certain model, I know I am talking to a reseller and not to a manufacturer. If I ask if it is possible to deliver a certain screen component of a certain quality and the answer is negative, then I also know that I am talking to a reseller.”

We do business with manufacturers who specialise in certain iPhone models. A manu- facturer that specialises in a certain iPhone model is more likely to supply high quality parts, simply because they know more about the model. We deal with fixed manufacturers for parts and

It means our sourcing team can take the time to check all small parts and displays and compa- re them with what is available on the market. If stocks run low, they have to be replenished quickly, leaving less time for quality control. Checks After we find the right parts, they are checked by the sourcing team in Shenzhen. Many companies check quality on the spot at the electronics market but carrying out thorough checks there is very difficult due to the lighting and crowds. We always check the parts and screens in our lab, where the working con- ditions are always the same.

I personally call them "tension tools" because you are using it to apply slight tension to flex cables to safely remove them.”

Besides basic repair tools we also offer all you need to start micro soldering! To make things easy for you, we have put down a list of tools you need to get started! First, you need a simufocal ( 1 ) microscope head . With this microscope head, you can look at the part both through the camera and directly via the microscope. To capture images and video of your work, use a standard ( 2 ) 1080p 60fps microscope camera in combination with a ( 3 ) . 35 reduction lens . You use that lens to mount a C-mount camera on top of the microscope head. Micro soldering is, of course, a precise job, so you need a good view. With the ( 4 ) .5x Barlow lens you create the perfect distance to see everything well. We also recommend using a ( 5 ) barlow lens cover to ensure that no dust gets on your microscope head. For the very best image, also use a ( 6 ) 144 LED light . This lamp provides an optimal view of your workplace. Do you want to start with level 3 repairs?

t is important to understand that used devices have several underlying factors that determine There quality level. One of the most important factors involved, is the battery statistics. Batteries tend to go bad over time based on both charge cycles and cell age, regardless of usage. Do you want to find out more about this matter? Read along. Factor 1: Cell age First of all, the current Lithium-Ion technology (Li- ion batteries) that is regularly used in smartphones takes about 24 months to be considered “expired” due to internal chemistry breakdown. Even basic testing to extract the statistics, does not give you a trustworthy idea of the battery health. Because it takes lengthy testing of the battery with multiple cycles to get reliable data of the battery health. In general, we can say that a battery that has been used for 12 months, is halfway through its lifecy- cle. Please note, that this article was written with a broad spectrum of experience that fits most Lith - ium Ion batteries currently used in smartphones introduced through 2020. The entire ageing process of batteries is still a fre- quent debated subject, since it is still not fully un- derstood. Now, we are catching up on the science. Unfortunatley, we still do not have a complete answer. However, without a complete answer, we can see a few reasons why this might be occurring: The first theory is that dendrites can form along the anode of the battery cell. When the an- ode has imperfections, dendrites have a nucle- ation site to form. Once formed, dendrites will only increase and can grow to puncture the batteries layers. Therefore, the battery performance drops. The second theory is that a highly resis- tant cover layer forms on the anode during stor- age. This causes a malfunction of the battery cell, causing the lithium to drain from the cell. This cover layer normally disappears during use but constantly grows in the battery if it is not charged. 1. 2. The latest and most likely theory is that Li-ion batteries lose even more voltage than normal because they are stored at incorrect temperatures or voltages. If the total voltage of the battery has fallen below a certain level, it is possible to breathe new life into the battery, but it still loses capacity. 3.

Factor 2: Cycle counts

The second factor to pay attention to, is cycle counts. As batteries age, the cell itself will start to transform in portions to a rock type content, see figure 1. In the simplest of terms, this pre - vents the cell from holding the same energy as it once did. Even people with no knowledge of the technology, can recognize this symptom. If you have ever had a battery die at 40%, basically the battery was unable to hold voltage and died prematurely. You can compare the original 0-100% measure- ment based on cell age with the cycle counts. The outcome: about 730 complete cycles after 2 years of daily charging. Please note, this can vary depending on the brand and batteries in- ternal chemistry, and has been known to vary between 5-800 cycles. Combine both factors, it would mean that a battery will go from 100% to 0% in 24 months and 730 cycles.

FUNCTIONS THAT DETERMINE THE BATTERY QUALITY

Factor 3: Battery health The final factor would be current battery health. This is based on the math between both the design capacity and the actual capacity of the cell. For iP- hones, this is easy to determine because they use a measurement that is constantly doing learning cy- cles. Therefore, iPhones create averages that turn out to be this “battery health”. So to Illustrate this, if the batteries original capacity was 1000mah and the actual capacity was 765mah. Just plug that into an easy equation where D is design capacity and A is actual capacity. Formula: A / (D / 100) where 100 is the total percentage out of 100 of battery capacity. Plug in our numbers: 765 / ( 1000 / 100 ) Order of Operations: 765 / 10 Final percentage based on reported numbers: 76.5% Therefore, we can see that we are at about 77%, if we do the same rounding as the device does. So with all this info, we can look at the examples below and determine which ones are good. While there are more ways to continue to evaluate this informa- tion instinctually, we should be able to determine overall health with these three factors.

Battery statistics examples

M = Months C = Cycles BH = Battery Health

Let’s say, all batteries are 3000mah and 80%BH is the replacement time. 80% of 3000mah is 2400mah. 1. 8M 120C 97%BH = Good Battery 㨆 We can see here that we have a low cell age and low cycles. Also, the battery health matches those numbers. I would call this a good battery in a used phone. 2. 28M 50C 100%BH = Bad battery 㨏 Right off the bat, we hope you can see something here is fishy! How can we have 100% battery health with a 28 month cell age and 50 cycles. Easy, the battery was not used long enough to drop its first percentage point. It was sold and put into storage. This means that if the phone is used now, the bat- tery will start to perform those averages. It may start to show degraded health very prematurely once the averages reflect into BH. 3. 16M 1000C 70% BH = Bad battery 㨏 This reflects classic battery degradation and shows through all factors a bad battery as battery statis- tics intended and showed. With 16 months the bat- tery is nearing its expiry date, with 1000 cycles it is clearly a heavily used battery as well during those 16 months. Lastly the battery health has depleted a lot too. All in all a generally bad battery that would need replacing. So, now we hope you can see the relationship of battery statistics and used devices. Not all used devices have the same quality battery. Therefore we cherry pick our used devices not only based on cosmetics, like all other sellers. We evaluate every unit for proper battery statistics to make sure you are buying the quality you know 2Service stands for. Battery health alone does not tell you enough to make sure of this.

hen it comes to mobile repair, it feels like one of the biggest questions on every shop owners mind is what the future will hold. It is hard to really get a full picture of the industry from the single perspective of a shop owner. This tends to cause a little uncertainty in the future. It seems like a good idea to go ahead and go over some of my opinions on the future of repair. Based on a combined perspective that is rooted in the same day to day shop life but accentuated with the experience of working on the other side. So, let’s go ahead and cut to the chase and go over five things that I personally think will be in our future. Such as day to day mobile repairs and some of the effects we see in the future based on these predictions.

Encrypted Serialization of Parts: Your biggest worry.

"I think the first thing on everyone’s mind is encrypted seria - lization of parts. It is no secret that Apple has been locking down components. For example, the Biometric sensors, Touch ID and Face ID. Recently, we have also seen lock- downs of both the battery and the screen. These are, if not, the most replaced components in a device. I think it is plain to say that if you do not push the issue with your local legis- lation, we will see an even larger rise in parts. These will be irreplaceable, outside of going to the manufacturer. What is crazier is if you look at an assortment of the ten seemingly most common repairs. You will find that they are starting to serialize more components. This requires serial swaps to enable previously working functions that are just software based, not hardware based. A troubling sign indeed. To un- derstand this in a straightforward way, take a look at the graphic on the next page. This dictates the trend over time and the truth will be clear".
