Community members were inspired by a one-of-a-kind art experience in Russell on last Saturday. On October 20, DeafBlind Ontario Ser- vices hosted their second annual Art in the Dark fundraising event at Russell High School. Attendees learned more about the artistic process while undergoing a simu- lation exercise wearing earplugs and an eye mask. Through their sense of touch, they created a work of art using wooden canvases and a rainbow of wood chips, providing them with a better understanding of deafblindness. “It was fun, it gives you an idea of when you’re missing a sense, how this can take a lot of your experience because we really rely on our senses of hearing and sight,” commented Roxanne Backes, an attendee of the event. Art in the Dark, presented by the Lions Club of Russell, raises funds to support specialized services for individuals who are deafblind. To enhance this sensory expe- rience, guests also enjoyed a dinner, a live and silent auction, and a trip raffle where one guest won a round trip flight for two to anywhere WestJet flies. Art in the Dark is based on DeafBlind Ontario Services’ Community Services - 4FOTPSZ&YQMPSBUJPO"SUT 4&"5.
