Katus Ranch - Angus Seedstock Bull Sale [3/8/26]

Sunday, March 8, 2026 Lemmon Livestock • Lemmon, SD • 1 p.m. MDT Seing 65 Angus Bus

Lot 1

Dear neighbors, friends and fellow cattlemen, It is with great pleasure that our crew welcomes you to the 3rd annual Katus Ranch Angus Seedstock production sale. It has been one heck of a year. Plentiful rains and more green grass than you have ever seen. With all that, the cattle had it pretty good out on pasture for the summer. I’ve heard just about from everyone that calf weights were up and as everyone knows prices were at record highs. Let’s take a moment and soak it all in because you as cattle producers deserve it more than ever with all the hard work put in over the years. With the cow numbers at record lows there is no better time than now for those of you that are fully stocked. This early winter provided us with many challenges. From really wet muddy conditions to winter rain. This made it quite challenging to keep bulls clean. We bedded every day and still couldn’t seem to keep up with it. 50 degrees one day and 10 the next! The bulls carry a little tag but like one guy said, it will all be gone in May. Our philosophy has been you have to start with the cow and the bulls will follow. That is the reason for our extensive embryo program. We have identified several proven cows of donor quality and mated them to proven bulls. With that we can provide you the customer with top-of-the-line genetics and replicate that into many full siblings that sire a consistent product. We are always on the lookout for the next generation of donor cow to introduce into our herd and found one in the Musgrave Angus herd. Musgrave Forever Lady 2121 brings forth tremendous fleshing ability and a great udder. Made wide and deep she will play a major part for years to come. Check out her Lot 1 bull calf! She joins our exciting donor battery ready to take us to the next level. We treat our registered herd just like our commercial herd. They have to forage long into the fall on cornstalks and maintain condition. This makes for a real-world cowherd that will survive the test of time. All the bulls are fed a balanced ration prepared by Tyler Melroe ensuring that they can express their genetic potential without sacrificing foot quality. Full vaccination and mineral program. They will be semen tested before delivery start- ing in April. As I write, the next generation of Katus calves are starting to hit the ground and boy are there some exciting matings coming. Thank you for all your support on this exciting journey we are on, and we look forward to seeing you on March 8th. Sincerely, Katus Ranch

American Angus Association Selection Tools

Maternal EPDs Heifer Pregnancy (HP) , is a selec- tion tool to increase the probability or chance of a sire’s daughters be- coming pregnant as first-calf heifers during a normal breeding season. A higher EPD is the more favorable direction and the EPD is reported in percentage units. Calving Ease Maternal (CEM) , is expressed as a difference in per- centage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf daughters. It predicts the average ease with which a sire’s daughters will calve as first-calf heifers when compared to daughters of other sires. Maternal Milk EPD (Milk) , is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters com- pared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability. Teat Size EPD (Teat) , expressed in units of teat size score, with a higher EPD indicating a sire will produce daughters with smaller teat size compared to that of other sires’ daughters. Udder Suspension EPD (UDDR) , expressed in units of udder suspen- sion score, with a higher EPD indi- cating a sire will produce daughters with tighter udder suspension compared to that of other sires’ daughters. Functional Longevity EPD (FL) , expressed in number of calves, is a predictor of the number of calves a sire’s daughters are predicted to produce by 6 years of age com- pared to that of other sires’ daugh- ters. A higher EPD is the more favorable direction indicating more calves produced on average.

Management EPDs Docility EPD (Doc) , is expressed as a difference in yearling cattle temperament, with a higher value indicating more favorable docility. It predicts the average difference of progeny from a sire in comparison with another sire’s calves. In herds where temperament problems are not an issue, this expected differ- ence would not be realized. Claw Set EPD (Claw) , is expressed in units of claw-set score, with a lower EPD being more favorable in- dicating a sire will produce progeny with more ideal claw set. The ideal claw set is toes that are symmetri- cal, even and appropriately spaced. Foot Angle EPD (Angle) , is ex- pressed in units of foot-angle score, with a lower EPD being more favor- able indicating a sire will produce progeny with more ideal foot angle. The ideal is a 45-degree angle at the pastern joint with appropriate toe length and heel depth. Carcass EPDs Carcass Weight EPD (CW) , ex- pressed in pounds is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny com- pared to progeny of other sires. Marbling EPD (Marb) , expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Ribeye Area EPD (RE) , expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Fat Thickness EPD (Fat) , expressed in inches, is a predictor of the dif- ferences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Expected Progeny Difference (EPD) An EPD is the prediction of how future progeny are expected to perform relative to progeny of other animals within the same database. EPDs are expressed in units of mea- sure for the trait, plus or minus. Production EPDs Calving Ease Direct (CED ), is expressed as a difference in per- centage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers. Birth Weight EPD (BW) , expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Weaning Weight EPD (WW) , ex- pressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Yearling Weight EPD (YW) , ex- pressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Residual Average Daily Gain (RADG) , expressed in pounds per day, is a predictor of a sire’s genetic ability for postweaning gain in future progeny compared to that of other sires, given a constant amount of feed consumed. Scrotal Circumference EPD (SC) , ex- pressed in centimeters, is a predic- tor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to that of other sires.

Driving the science of better breeding There’s little room for error in the cattle business. Producers need the most advanced information to make smart selection decisions, and Angus Genetics Inc. (AGI) provides it through genomic-enhanced expected progeny differences (GE-EPDs). GE-EPDs have become the industry standard for herd improvement, building on decades of science-backed genetic evaluation tools originated and maintained through the American Angus Association ® , home to the largest and ever-growing single-breed beef cattle database. EPDs that traditionally contained all pedigree, performance and progeny information now also include results from available genomic, or DNA, tests. Breeders who use genomic technology give buyers access to AGI-generated GE-EPDs that provide:

Increased predictability and decreased risk for young and unproven animals due to enhanced accuracy of EPDs

Better characterization of genetics for difficult-to-measure performance traits (such as carcass traits, maternal traits and feed efficiency) The ability to make more rapid progress for traits that are important to you, due to: · more accurate selection · easier identification of genetic outliers · the ability to propagate young animals with confidence earlier in their lives

In fact, GE-EPDs on unproven animals have the same amount of accuracy as if they have recorded an average of 15 progeny, depending on the trait. That’s valuable insight, offered regularly through the breed’s weekly national cattle evaluation.

MUSGRAVE HONOR ROLL 33N 1 Reg. #: BD: BW: Act. WW: 205-Wt: WW-R: 365-Wt. YW-R: Dam WR:

When we purchased the great Forever Lady 2121 from Musgrave’s last spring we knew she was coming with a pretty good bull calf at side. We could never have imagined that he would be this good! The pair went straight to Yackley’s in Onida, SD for flushing and 33N spent all summer there. He and his dam, 2121 were highlights of everyone’s tours all summer. Tyler says she is the best Jumbo daughter walking. Being in a dry lot all summer didn’t affect him at all. He weaned off at an incredible 994 pounds in early September. Coming into this world at a modest 80 pounds makes this even more remarkable. He never stopped there and broke the 1400-pound mark at 365 days! With his great EPD profile, 33N is very smooth made with power that comes from the Jumbo side of the pedigree. His sire, Hinkson’s Honor Roll, is an S Architect son that brings balance and sleep all night calving ease, structurally sound design, and the maternal integrity to build a better cow herd. 33N is fairly slick haired so he would work in southern states. Mark him down as a great calving ease, pounds heavy herd bull prospect that will take you to the next level. We will be using him back in our herd.

Herd Bull alert here! We all know that the Prolifics have been very successful everywhere they are used. 5117 is no exception. The mating with Mill Brae Georgina 4086 turned out to be one of a kind. Top 10% in 10 categories with his genomic profile! Check out his 80-pound BW to go along with the rest of his breed leading EPD values. He has been a standout all summer. Herd bull characteristics abound. Proclaim’s dam, 4086 sold for 1/2 interest in Coleman’s Maternal Source Female sale giving her a $420,000 valuation. She carries a balanced EPD profile that combines growth, efficiency, carcass merit, and functional traits. She backs all that up with a great phenotypical package, excellent udder, feet in a feminine and broody design. Paired with Ellingson Prolific’s power and foot structure, the progeny will be hard to fault. He will be used in our program.

Fair N Square was added to our program for his outstanding female producing capabilities. 5118 is a testament that he can add power too! Long, thick made and full of muscle is what I wrote down. He comes from our ET program and out of the SAV Blackcap May 5832 cow that never misses. She stems from the Registry x 4136 mating and is as consistent as you can get in a cow. Any mating I try with her is always exciting and very consistently good. Check out his 365-day wt. (1519#)! Predictability is one of the most important traits and he is full of it. 5118 is the first of 4 full brothers so take advantage of these breeding pieces and add some consistency to your calf crop.

Calving ease Fair N Square that didn’t have the best recip momma. He made up for it after weaning.

Good thing for parentage testing, this calf got mixed up at birth with another by mistake but boy are we glad he turned out this way. He fits right in with his full brothers with above average genomics.

He has not disappointed us one bit. Navigator has the highest ratioing calves this year at Berans Bros in Kansas and has some rippers for Pete Bauman in Linton. These Navigators are just flat good. Long, muscular with great Angus character. They have been favorites of everyone that sees them and ours too. We will use him heavily in the future. 5133 hit the ground running and hasn’t stopped. Top 20% in eleven genomic traits. His dam, Sua Prosperity Blackbird 1294 left us too soon but is another never miss donor cow. We have four full sibs out of this mating so take advantage of the consistent power that comes with it.

One of the youngest bulls in the sale. His mother, a former donor cow for Classic Angus, came up with a bad bag this summer so it affected his performance. With her past record, it is safe to say he will be ok.

About our Ranch

At the Katus Ranch we are much more than just a seedstock op- eration. We are 4th and 5th generation ranchers that take pride in the diversification of our farm and ranch. On the ranch side we are investing in our embryo transfer program to bring our customers genetics from some of the most consistent, long-lasting cows in the breed and mating them with the highly maternal power genet- ics that we have secured. This allows our product to not only be of the highest quality but also be diverse in the genetic packages that we are offering. Our commercial cattle herd has been the main focus for decades. We feel we have built our cows into breed leading genetic ma- chines. The commercial bred heifer program has grown to be a source of highly sought after females by the commercial cattlemen from all across the nation. We are extremely proud of the F! Baldie heifers and purebred commercial heifers that we supply our cus- tomers with year in and year out. We also utilize our own commer- cial cows in our extensive embryo program.

We also operate an on-farm feedlot that we background all our calves in. We will sell our program calves through the Northern Livestock sale in January and deliver later that month. We have been blessed that buyers fight for the right to own our calves, and this reflects in the sale topping prices realized. This confirms that breed leading genetics do pay. We will take all our late April, May and June born calves to finish in our feedlot. Marketing them through all natural programs. We raise all our own feedstuffs for our cattle and feedlot on our ranch. Raising corn for silage and grain. Our self-sufficiency extends to our farming practices also where we seed, spray, and harvest all our own crops. Putting up enough forage to carry us through the year and hopefully into the next. Planting cover crops and grazing our cow herd well into the fall and winter to help alleviate high feeding costs. We are a family operation, but we do rely on neighbors for extra help throughout the year. Without this dedication all of this would not be possible.

His granddam, EA Bells Girl 7617 is a pathfinder legend at Ellingson Angus, the mother of several AI studs such as Badlands, Brickhouse, Preeminent, Progressive and Elite. You will appreciate these Brickhouse progeny for their massive body type, natural thickness and masculinity. 5108 combines top of the breed weaning and yearling weights with maternal characteristics abound. Very good Brickhouse son. Weaned at 726lbs. and over a 1300lb. YW. Top 1% foot scores! Solid all-around genomic scores. Brickhouse adds payweight.

Here is our donor cow SAV Emblynette 8616’s natural calf. She spent most of the summer at Yackley’s getting flushed so he didn’t get to enjoy all the lush grass in our pastures. 5501 started out life at a modest 70 pounds but did his best to achieve the 700-pound weaning weight. He comes in a more moderate Brickhouse package. Full of red meat and old school Angus character. He packs the maternal strengths to make a broody set of easy fleshing females.

This is a no-miss kind of cow. Her mother was Braydon’s first registered cow and came from the SAV program in 2013. Kelly did a great job helping Braydon with this pick and starting him out right. The dam to 5608 has produced 4 calves with a calving interval of 363 days, average BW od 87 pounds and a weaning ratio of 105. She produced the top Badlands calf in our Inaugural sale selling for $12,000. 5113 is the first progeny of our herd sire Ellingson Program. He is a Prolific son that had many admirers at the Ellingson sale when he was the second high selling Prolific bull calf. He has surpassed all expectations in his first calf crop. 5113 excels in top 20% of 12 traits. Exceptional foot scores, high WW and YW EPDs and great udder scores. Program has been very consistent siring top performers for Jeff and Laredo Werner in their sale offering this year. Combine the Prolific sire line with SAV Emblynette 8616’s lineage of Rainfall and Bismarck and all the stars align. I don’t think you could go wrong with this Program son that adds thickness, dimension and masculinity.

5623’s dam has been a consistent producer for us. She stems from the Brenner Angus herd and carries the Ellingson Ribeye bloodline. Ribeye has been very successful for Sidney and he is going back to the semen tank and utilizing it again. 5623 is a very balanced calf with a nice EPD profile.

A well-made Program son with great maternal numbers. Top 20% in 7 categories. A product of our embryo program out of the very consistent 8616 donor. He is a full sib to Lots 35 and 38.

5609 starts off the Ellingson Lakota group with a bang. The 9712 cow came to us from Jeff and Laredo Werner and she produces those powerful, consistent cow bulls that are highly sought after. Blending the highly popular Lakota with the Carlson Right On 5001 bloodline should continue to provide the pounds heavy calves that 9712 is known to produce. The combination of a +7 CED with breed- leading weaning and yearling weights makes him a breeding piece everyone could use. 9712 has a 107 WW ratio with a 91 BW ratio on 3 calves. Just a mid-March calf.

Here is a calving ease Lakota with a +8 CED and actual BW of 72 pounds. A mid-March calf that still tipped the scale at 651 pounds. Out of an up-and-coming Maher Angus cow that was selected through their annual bull and female sale. Calving ease is bred in to 5625. As I write these notes, we just had our first Ellingson Lakota calf of the season born unassisted, watched on camera. They come easy and are jet black with lots of Angus character.

Another calving ease Lakota out of a nice young Maher Angus cow. The 352 cow has a BW ratio of 94 and a WW ratio of 116 on two bull calves. I think the youngest calf in the sale with an April 9th birthdate. We would normally keep all the April calves until they are two’s but he needs to go breed heifers somewhere this year.

The only 21AR Justified in the sale combines the fresh genetics of SAV Cattlemaster to offer calving ease and growth. We purchased the sire to 5630 at the 2024 21 Angus Ranch sale as the #1 selling Justified son in the sale. He has done a great job for us but unfortunately, we lost him this past summer. We liked his calves so much that we just replaced him with the #1 Justified calf at 21AR just the other day. A +10 CED and an actual 76-pound BW to ratio 94, with a 661 205-day weight to ratio 102 makes him a good choice.

Here are the first progeny from a sire we invested in for his calving ease and growth. BA Goliath calves start small and grow. Calving ease bred in with Confidence Plus and out of a great Rachel 1711 cow. 80-pound actual BW.
