New Dances New Choreographers 2022 Program

New Dances, New Choreographers is an enriching process for dancers and choreographers alike. The result is a graceful collaboration of imaginative and enticing concepts, dance moves and unique expression showcasing their passion for performance alongside original music created by local composers from Teton Music School. The dancers have been working hard to create dance pieces that speak to them and hopefully reach to your hearts as well.

presents

2022 JUNIOR REPERTORY COMPANY SUM OF OUR PARTS 6:00PM APR 22 / 23 THE CENTER THEATER IN-PERSON // LIVESTREAM

Dear Friends & Family,

I am so excited to share with you a project near and dear to me, and at the heart of the School at DW… New Dances / New Choreographers . Every year, our Junior Repertory Company Dancers look forward to this process and I love watching the dancers transform into artists and creators. Our student choreographers, ranging from 15-18 years old, take a class in choreography, learning tools and techniques to catalyze the creative process. In January, they audition their peers and begin to create and translate movement vocabulary to their classmates. As their pieces come to life, we see teamwork, problem solving, and young artists beginning to debate what is important to them and how they can present their ideas through movement.

Dancer: Kate Frederick

Choosing music becomes a large part of the process, and this year it was incredibly exciting to witness the collaboration of students fromTeton Music School with JRC Choreographers . The music composers worked alongside the dancers to create original music for three of the dances. Choreographers participated in marketing and funding tasks, making costume, staging, and lighting choices – all to culminate in this evening’s performance. Beyond the student work, this year the JRC students also had the amazing opportunity of working with Lily Gelfand of David Dorfman Dance and award-winning choreographer Gina Patterson . Lily and Gina challenged the dancers to find new layers of themselves and modeled a professional working environment. This process provides a valuable opportunity for our students – typically a college-level experience. This year’s theme “Sum of Our Parts” feels very relevant to me as an alum myself and current JRC director. As I think about all the students, faculty, staff, donors, and parents that I have encountered during my time at DW, every person feels integral to the growth and success of the DW program. I believe in dance education because I believe dance is a reflection of life and a beautiful practice in being present and creating community. Thank you to the community that is here today and the community that has been built over the last 50 years for your support and love of the arts. I am so honored to share with you this year’s NDNC Performance. If you are joining us in person from the Center Theater, or are joining us virtually from the comfort of your own home, I hope you enjoy tonight’s performance and that you will join us for more of the 50th Anniversary Celebrations to come.

A QUIET CHAOS

Choreographer Morgan May

Dancers Lane Brazell, Biz Carlin, Kate Frederick, Zoe Joralemon, Edie May, Lola Roberts, Avery Taylor

Music “Dreamland Street” by Estevan Lira and Micha Pfeiffer, local composers from Teton Music School.

“SunWill Set” by Zöe Keating

For my piece I explored the theme of control vs chaos, specifically how our individual relation to that theme influences our interactions with others. Where we find ourselves on the spectrum from control to chaos often dictates where we find ourselves in the world and how we perceive our individual purpose. This perception of ourselves and our place can remain stable over time or constantly change, which partially contributes to our own individuality. In this piece, one dancer tends to represent chaos while the rest represent control, but the dancer changes every so often to represent this sort of emotional turmoil that everyone experiences within their own identity.

Dancers: Edie May and Zoe Joralemon

LOVE YOU FROM A DISTANCE

Choreographers Edie May and Zoe Joralemon

Dancers Lottie MacGregor, Morgan May, Paschall McDaniel, Understudy: Delilah Irby

Music “Hearing” by Sleeping At Last

This piece explores the idea of feeling like you need someone, but not knowing how to express that need by creating a slight feeling of isolation throughout the piece.

SOUL TIED

Choreographer Kate Frederick

Dancers Zoe Joralemon, Morgan May, Edie May, Avery Taylor

Music “ The Center Song”

by Johnny Stout, Sebastian Lira, and Martin Contreras, local composers fromTeton Music School This piece embodies the emotions of leaving those you love, yet still embracing your connection to them from a distance. Rather than portraying a sad ending or goodbye, it aims to focus on remembrance. The choreography itself is meant to display strong relationships and connections between the dancers whilst simultaneously exhibiting a sense of freedom.

Dancers: Avery Taylor and Kate Ryan

CLOCKWISE CONNECTION

Choreographers Kate Ryan and Avery Taylor

Dancers Lane Brazell, Biz Carlin, Kate Frederick, Lola Roberts

Music “Communication” by Ari Fowler and EvalynWogoman, local composers from Teton Music School.

As people, we plan out our hours, days, months, and even years. We often forget that the present moment is more important than what’s going to happen a week from now, a month from now, or even a year from now. When a moment has passed, there’s no going back. This piece portrays a desperate search for connection and love, but not being able to fully commit to this, because of an obsession with time.

WEIGHT UNTIL

Choreographers Lane Brazell and Lola Roberts

Dancers Biz Carlin, Zoe Joralemon, Sadie Mae LaPrade, Lottie MacGregor, Edie May, Paschall McDaniel,

Kate Ryan, Avery Taylor, Understudy: Frances Reid

Music “Babel” by Gustavo Bravetti

In this piece we explore ideas of unity and individuality alongside a deeper need for each other.
