Mental filtering – paying more attention to bad things and discounting the good stuff that has happened. Might look like – your soccer team winning the game but all you can think about is how you stuffed up that one shot.
Catastrophising – making a big deal out of something small. Might sound like – “My parents won’t let me go to the party; all my friends will hate me if I don’t go.”
Fortune telling – thinking you can predict the future, and knowing the outcome will be bad.
Mind reading – believing we know what someone else is thinking. Might sound like – “Everyone is staring at me; they must think I am ugly.”
Might sound like – “I know if I ask her out, she will say no.”
Negative labelling – strong labels that don’t reflect reality. Might sound like “I’m so stupid, everything I say is dumb."
Self-blaming – blaming yourself for things even if it had nothing to do with you. sounds like – “My teacher seems angry today and didn’t say hello to me, I must have done something to upset them.”
“Should” statements – believing things “should” be
a certain way. soundS like “I should look more like them to fit in."
Feelings as facts
– believing that if you feel something, it must be true. sounds like – “I feel like a loser, therefore I must be a loser.”
