GRANT AWARD: 1. The grant recipient is responsible for the initial $250 of the purchase price. In addition to the grant recipient’s initial $250 commitment, the Foundation will additionally contribute up to $1,000. The Foundation’s contribution will be paid directly to the seller. 2. Award funds can be used to purchase more than one ewe (lamb, yearling ewe, bred, or brood ewe). If buying more than one registered Suffolk, the Foundation requires funds from this program be used to purchase from only one breeder. This requirement is based on the belief that you, the winner of this grant, will benefit by not mixing animals from more than one breeder, as you start up. This requirement also simplifies our bookkeeping. 3. Recipients will receive complimentary United Junior Suffolk Sheep Association membership (current calendar year). 4. A list of eligible Suffolk breeders can be found on the United Suffolk Sheep Association website (www.suffolks.org). 5. A minimum of five grants are awarded, however, up to twenty-five grants may be awarded each year based on the quality of applications and deservedness of the applicants. JULIANA IMWALLE, NEW JERSEY One of the most important things I have learned in the past year with my ewe from the grant is how to set up a feed regimen and calculate costs. With my previous 4-H lease projects, the farmers would determine how much the sheep ate and they would pay the bills, but with my ewe, I have gotten to learn a great deal about how much she should be eating and feed costs in my area.
HAILEY THOELE, MINNESOTA
PAISLEY CAMPBELL, MARYLAND With the help of the United Suffolk Foundation grant, Paisley was able to purchase her first Suffolk ewe, Patsy, from Slack Club Lambs (Tom & Val Slack). Patsy quickly became more than just a project, she became the foundation of Paisley’s passion for the breed. Together, they had an incredibly
Last year I had the privilege of winning the Suffolk Ewe Grant. I was lucky enough to work with Jeremy Geske for my purchase of Muffin
my January Ewe. Since then I have showed Muffin at our County Fair and the MN state fair where we won 2nd in her class. I also fell in love with Suffolks and was able to purchase 2 more bred ewes with the help of my parents. We took Muffin back to Jeremy’s to be bred for this year. This past February myself and other FFA members went to Mankato. I did a sheep proficiency talk about the Suffolks that I own and how I maintain and care for them. I earned second place and will be going to state for this! This is certainly an experience that I will treasure and never forget. Thank you for helping me further my knowledge and experience with the Suffolk breed!
successful year in the show ring, winning multiple showmanship competitions, including Grand Champion Junior Sheep Showman at the Maryland State Fair. Through this experience, Paisley not only gained confidence and skill, but also developed a deep love for Suffolk sheep. To further develop her flock, Paisley purchased a second Suffolk ewe, a yearling from Touchdown Acres, to jumpstart her breeding program. Then, with guidance from Evan Snyder at McCauley Suffolks, she leased a ram and successfully bred her yearling ewe, resulting in her pride and joy, a ram lamb she named Red Foley shown in the picture. This milestone marked the beginning of Paisley’s own breeding program, something she is incredibly proud of and excited to continue growing. 119
