“The Three Rs” Defined: Transforming Nursing Education for Health Equity
As Nightingale Education Group continues to further its purpose, we remain committed to a forward-thinking approach rooted in the “Three Rs.” This multifaceted framework aims to close health equity gaps by pre- paring a relevantly skilled, readily available nursing workforce, representative of the communities they serve.
Nightingale’s innovative curriculum design integrates concept-based education and strategic enrollment design using a state- based model with a deep commitment to representation and equity in underserved communities. Our initiatives work together toward a unified and powerful vision focused on building a future where patients receive care from nurses who understand, represent, and uplift the communities they serve.

Daily Nurse Covers School Nursing: The Overlooked Career Catalyst Nurses represent the backbone of health care. They are on the frontlines of care delivery and practice, while also enabling communication and bridging the gaps between patients, their family and caretakers, and the rest of the medical industry. In this eye-opening article , Dr. Juliet Kolde shares how stepping into a public school clinic unlocked a whole new world of public health leadership, mental health advocacy, and creative wellness education. A Job Well Done: Celebrating a Successful Lockout Process The Bursar’s Office would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to the success of the recent Lockout process. Your collaboration, dedication, and unwavering commitment to our learners made all the difference. We are especially grateful for your quick response and support in unlocking learner accounts, ensuring they were able to post attendance with little to no delay. Your responsiveness, teamwork, and care had a direct and meaningful impact on our learners. Thanks to your efforts, learners have been able to continue their academic journey without interruption as we begin the Fall 2025 Semester. This is a powerful example of what we can accomplish when we come together, united by a shared commitment to putting our learners first.
Nightingale College Attends Emergency Nursing Association (ENA) Annual Conference From Sept. 17-20, the College attended the ENA annual conference in New Orleans, Louisiana. This event brought together a vast network of emergency nurses and emergency department professionals from all levels to help shape the future of the industry. Their decisions play a significant role in determining what is purchased and implemented across the industry. A presence at this event allowed the College to promote its nursing programs, get industry insight, and have direct engagement with key decision-makers. Sunset Review 2026: Legislative Efforts Underway to Support Distance Learning Nightingale is actively working with legislature in preparation for the Board of Registered Nursing’s 2026 sunset review. During this process, the Board must demonstrate its value to lawmakers. We are well-positioned to advocate for the inclusion of language in the reauthorization bill that would allow clinical rotations for accredited out-of-state distance programs. With strong legislative support, we are optimistic about a positive outcome and look forward to sharing more details soon.

Understanding the Tactical Review and Budgeting Cycle: Our Tactical Review process keeps budgets, forecasts, and operational plans aligned with Nightingale’s strategic outcomes year-round. Monthly Reviews Each function reviews actual spending vs. budget by the last day of every month for the prior month. Semester Review and Updates At the end of each semester, functions complete an Actual Spend Review and Tactical Update. Spring – June 15 Summer – October 15 Fall – February 15 Rolling 12-Month Forecasts Alongside each semester review, teams update forecasts to project results into the same term for the following year. Dynamic Funding Requests After each semester’s review, new funding requests must be submitted (May 31, Sept. 30, and Jan. 31). Requests move through a two-to-four-week workflow for vetting, documentation, and approval. Annual Planning Midyear retreats shape next year’s tactical plans, with budgets finalized in September and due Oct. 15. Together, these steps form a continuous cycle that keeps resources flexible, priorities current, and funding decisions transparent.

Words of Wisdom
Dear Collaborators, As president of the college, my highest priority is keeping our learners at the center of every decision we make. As both an educational institution and a workforce solutions organization, our impact depends on preparing learners to address real- world challenges in health care. Both in theory and in practice, preparation stems from skills and ideas that inevitably drive innovation, serve commu- nities, and impact the future of care. Throughout my time at Nightingale, I have seen that impactful ideas come from every corner of the organization. Leaders are not always the source of great ideas; they are the ones who listen, support, and empower great ideas. Each collaborator plays a vital role in driving the meaningful change we aim to achieve, and as a leader, my priority is to seek out the best ideas, support their implementation, and ensure that those who contribute feel respected and valued. Each collaborator is essential to our success, and when they thrive, our learners thrive, and so does the workforce they serve. Working together to meet goals, share ideas, and strive for improvement will enable us to deliver results as the organization continues to grow.
What continues to inspire me most is the belief that organizational success starts with individual transformation. Our goals can only be reached when each person commits to becoming the best version of themselves. This journey won’t look the same for everyone, and it shouldn’t, but our culture makes space for each collaborator’s unique path toward growth. By fostering a culture that supports individual growth, we can continue to strengthen the collective outcomes we aim to accomplish. This is also true for our learners as we focus on a holistic human-development approach. As an organization, we do a tremendous job of attracting individuals who want to make a difference. The environment we have built allows individuals to bring their skills and passions to life in support of our learners. It is incredibly powerful to see how we continue to evolve, rethinking our practices, processes, and perspectives. We reimagine what is possible in everything from teaching to data, workforce needs to support human potential, and beyond. By constantly exploring new and better ways to teach, learn, and solve problems, we inspire progress in both organizational outcomes and in the lives and communities our learners transform across the healthcare landscape. All my best, Dr. Jeffrey Olsen

Empowering Nurses, Elevating Care: Select Medical and Nightingale’s Transformative Partnership
As one of the largest providers of critical illness recovery and both inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation, Select Medical is guided by its mission to deliver an exceptional patient care experience that promotes healing and recovery in a compassionate environment.
“Over the years, Select Medical has devoted itself to partnering with education organizations like Nightingale so that we can be a part of the educational fabric of healthcare careers,” said Dr. Darrell Luzzo, Senior Vice President of Workforce Development and Education at Select Medical. Two years ago, Select Medical made workforce development a priority by creating uPLIFT, an initiative designed to expand opportunities for prelicensure nursing students to gain clinical experience by engaging in clinical rotations at Select Medical hospitals.
“By investing in partnerships with nursing schools, we have nearly doubled the number of student nurses in our hospitals in just two years,” said Luzzo. “Our goal is for 100% of our hospitals to offer clinical rotations to nursing students by the end of 2026.” The Select Medical-Nightingale College partnership is one of the first of its kind. After establishing the uPLIFT initiative in central Pennsylvania, where Select Medical is headquartered, the collaboration quickly evolved into a nationwide partnership driven by the shared presence and reach of both organizations across the U.S.
14
Specializing in critical illness recovery and inpatient rehabilitation, Select Medical cares for patients transitioning from an ICU setting — an environment where it is essential to have nurses who are compassionate, deeply committed to their specialty expertise and profession, and fully aware of the lifesaving role they play. Ultimately, both Nightingale and Select Medical aim to inspire a passion to learn and serve this growing patient population. This fall, the Nightingale and Select Medical partnership will reach new heights as Select Medical expects to officially welcome Nightingale College learners into its hospitals. “I have no doubt we’ll quickly see the benefits of having Nightingale learners in our facilities,” said Luzzo. “We are just getting started, but we believe that every learner who completes a clinical rotation with us will gain a deeper appreciation and understanding of the nursing profession.” United by a shared commitment to honesty, integrity, and nursing excellence, Select Medical and Nightingale are redefining what is possible through partnership. Expanding access to meaningful career opportunities for nurses is a goal that can only be achieved through strong and strategic collaboration. In the coming years, Select Medical envisions this partnership evolving into a dynamic platform where learners can engage firsthand with specialty care experiences along their educational journey. Together, both organizations plan to broaden access to essential education and training, with a particular focus on critical illness and inpatient rehabilitation. By combining the expertise of both organizations, this partnership has the potential to make a lasting impact on the nursing profession and the quality of patient care for generations to come. “Nightingale is one of our most appreciated and valued partners because our missions align so closely. It’s the perfect match,” said Luzzo.

In September and October, we celebrate 86 collaborator anniversaries at Nightingale Education Group. We are proud of the contributions each collaborator has made in their tenure, and we would not be successful without their efforts. Thanks to these collaborators’ dedication we have been able to make a meaningful impact and contribute to a Better World through Better Humanity and Better Health.

Where did you go to college, and what did you like most about your experience? Collab Connections
“I completed my undergraduate studies at the University of Utah and earned my graduate degree from Liberty University, where I appreciated the flexible learning options and strong support for adult students and working professionals. The academic rigor and resources provided at both colleges were well-structured with clear pathways to career readiness, research opportuni- ties, internships, and career services.” Bernice Ova Specialist II, College Curriculum

“I attended The Tennessee State University (TSU), which is an HBCU (historically Black college and university). I wholeheartedly loved my experience at TSU because it helped shape me into the woman I am today. TSU has been my ‘true north’ and is where I discovered the power of education and the strength within myself. Through rigorous coursework, meaningful relationships, and transformative experience, I grew as an individual. TSU provided the compass that guided me toward purpose, resilience, and leadership and shaped me into the professional I am today.” Crystal Doss Supervisor, Admissions

“I went to Brigham Young University and Texas Tech University. I enjoyed my time at BYU and gained so many skills. However, I loved my smaller classes at Texas Tech. I felt like my master’s [program] was so well-planned and executed. It elevated my level of thinking and problem-solving.” Marjorie Miller Assistant Professor II General Education
“I graduated from California State University, Chico with a BS in health science and a minor in Spanish. I loved the California campus experience in a beautiful college town. It was a time of exploration and growth as an individual. Next, I graduated from California State University, Sacramento with a BSN, which required a lot of focus and study. I then graduated from UCLA, with a master’s in nursing administration, a great experience that tied my educational goals to my work responsibilities in a hospital. Finally, I graduated from the University of San Francisco with a doctor- ate in nursing practice and executive leadership. I loved this school, its history, values, and strong sense of tradition. All California schools that promoted learning and precious memories!” Kathleen Penzes Professor, Didactic

Collab Corner What led you to your career at Nightingale Education Group? I didn’t fully realize it at the time, but I was going “
I was drawn to Nightingale because of its mission to prepare nurses who are not only highly skilled but also deeply compassionate and representative of the communities they serve. To me, nursing education has always been more than coursework; it’s about shaping professionals who will touch lives and help address the nursing shortage with competence and heart. I’ve been fortunate to work alongside incredible nurses and witness the impact they have on learners, colleagues, and patients. Through my own family’s healthcare journey, I’ve also seen how powerful nursing can be when expertise is paired with humanity. Those personal and profes- sional experiences continue to inspire my work and remind me why preparing the next generation of nurse’s matters. With a background in assessment and program development, I was eager to join an institution that values innovation while keeping learners and patient outcomes at the center. Nightingale’s commitment to growth, technology, and real-world readiness aligns with my own passion for meaningful, lasting change. I’m proud to be a part of this amazing team and happy that Nightingale is my forever home.”

through what felt like a ‘career crisis.’ The opportunity to apply to Nightingale came at an important time in my life when I was yearning for change but unsure of what that change would look like or how to make it happen. I hadn’t yet recognized that the shift I needed was related to my career. At the time, I was pursuing acting in NYC and working part time at a performing arts college. Then COVID hit, and like so many others, everything I’d been working toward was thrown off course. Then, my good friend and now collaborator Lisa Ray reached out to me about an opening on the team. That conversation marked the beginning of a new chapter for me. As we talked more about the role and Nightingale’s mission, I knew I needed to join this community. I am so happy I jumped on that opportunity and now thrilled to be part of Nightingale. Huge shout-out to the Registration Management team!” Stephen Velasquez Advisor II, Registration Management

Alumni Relations Looks to Mentorship to Enhance Connections For Nightingale College learners, staying connected doesn’t have to end after graduation. “In many ways, Nightingale’s alumni are the College’s most valuable resource, and maintaining that connection is important for the graduate, Nightingale, and fellow alumni,” said Bernard C. Austin III, Director of Alumni Relations. To further maximize that resource, Austin said he is excited that the College has established a new partner- ship with LiveAlumni, a database system that provides colleges and universities with information that alumni post publicly on their LinkedIn pages. “If ‘Bernard Austin’ graduated five years ago and he moved and he didn’t update us, or if he’s no longer using the email [we have on file] or his number changed, there’s no way for us to connect with him,” Austin said. “This new database provides us with the latest information he posted on LinkedIn, so I can connect with him via LinkedIn and reach out directly to provide that personal touch.” Through this additional resource, alumni’s experiences in the workforce could be of use to other Nightingale graduates through LinkedIn reviews of companies. “If there’s one company that has one or two stars, we know what we need to do in reaching out if we hear alumni saying they’re interested in working there,” said Austin. Reaching out may entail the Alumni Relations department connecting with the alumni to learn if there’s a personal reason for choosing that company to determine if there might be a better fit or contacting the employer to share the alumni’s skill set and how they could best be used in that work setting. “It’s really about networking and building partnerships,” said Austin. Another avenue to aid alumni is Upnotch, a mentorship platform available through the LiveAid partnership. This free resource is available for alumni who might feel
isolated and don’t have an outlet to voice concerns, doubts, or simply need encouragement from people who have that real-world experience. “A lot of nursing students leave within the first three years,” said Austin, who envisions a different outcome for Nightingale learners. “We want to be with them from graduation all the way through retirement.” Upnotch initially will be available to 1,000 alumni, a number Austin said would expand throughout the year. There is no lottery system, as interested alumni can respond to the Alumni Relations department’s communications about the platform. Upon launching, Nightingale alumni will create an account they can tailor to their specific mentor interests and availability, such as time zones and career fields. Mentors do not have to just be in the nursing field, as alumni are able to tap into more business- minded or entrepreneur-focused advisors. Upnotch has a grading system in which both the mentor and mentee can grade each other, which Austin said would help ensure all parties are getting the most out of their involvement. While the sessions are private, Austin will be able to see grades and attendance. “If an alumnus says their mentor gets a one or two, I can reach out and ask what’s going on with the mentor,” Austin said. “If they’re missing sessions, I can ask if they’ve had a life change or if they feel they no longer need the service, or if they need to pause their account so they’re not taking up a slot that other people could be using.” Investing in programs that benefit alumni provides an opportunity for them to help future alumni. “That connection is very important,” said Austin. “The longer they stay in nursing, the more viable they become to the employer and the more viable they become to us. If we know that you are in a hiring position or a workforce development program, you can help your fellow alumni.”
Be on the lookout for various ways to connect with the Alumni Relations department and to take part in the mentorship opportunity. Brightening Our Future

As we reflect in the glow of Flame Forward!, one truth becomes clear: the spark we carry within us is never static. Sometimes it burns brightly and other times it flickers, but moments of connection, courage, and shared vulnerability help us reignite the flame, reminding us of our strength and resilience. In that same spirit, we are more than honored to share the stories of two collaborators who opened their hearts with raw honesty and vulnerability. Their journeys inspire us not only to reignite our own flame, but to let that renewed spark guide and motivate us along our own unique paths of wellness. Stephen Bradley For Stephen Bradley, that flame became a lifeline. After a near-death experience 18 months ago, Stephen took bold steps to transform his life. Through meditation, Buddhism, and a deep commitment to his physical health, he shed 75 pounds and discovered a renewed vitality. Now, at 56, he’s in the best shape of his life and is a living example of what it means to choose growth and to let a challenge fuel transformation. Gabrielle Young For Gabrielle Young, the flame was about rediscovering herself amid life’s demands. Navigating postpartum anxiety and the pressures of motherhood, Gabrielle realized that true wellness required her to make space for her own emotional health. Through small daily rituals and the courage to step outside her comfort zone, she has found new confidence, joy, and a sense of peace. Today, she carries her flame not only for herself but her family too. Most recently, Gabrielle completed her certification as a Zumba instructor and is looking forward to bringing that same passion and energy to her local community center. Their stories remind us that Flame Forward! is more than a moment, it is a movement. It is the spark that in- spires us to fan our own flame, to honor our journeys, and to continue becoming the best versions of ourselves. By sharing these stories, we are reminded of the connecting fibers of our common humanity and how courage, struggle, and growth are threads we all share. We hope these reflections inspire you to set or revisit your own intentions, and to keep fanning your flame as you move forward with openness and care for the whole you. May you carry this spark into your days as a quiet reminder that you are never alone on the path of becoming. Reigniting the Flame, Together Nightingale Wellness Program

Work-from-Home Tip No. 18 Prioritizing Time Off At Nightingale Education Group, we strongly encourage all collaborators to use their time off. Now more than ever, time away from work is essential to both your mental and physical well-being. When you take time off, you might choose to exercise, read or write, meditate, catch up on personal tasks, connect with friends and family, go on vacation, or enjoy one of your favorite hobbies. Prioritizing time off and taking wellness days is crucial to support work-life balance in a remote environment. While it might be tempting to maximize your accrued time off, maxing out your vacation balance can be counterproductive to your well-being. Taking regular breaks throughout the year helps maintain balance, reduces stress, and prevents burnout. With both vacation and wellness time, collaborators are encouraged to maintain at least 24 hours of accrued vacation time for unforeseen circumstances. With a function leader’s approval, eligible collaborators may also borrow up to 40 hours of vacation time. For more information regarding borrowed time off, please contact a member of CX.
