MARCH 2024

Life’s Most Rewarding 180-Degree Turn Parenthood’s Imperfect Journey

Nothing changes your life quite like parenthood. You live your whole life caring and thinking about yourself, then, all of a sudden, your life isn’t just about you. It’s a complete 180, and I wouldn’t

Meanwhile, Rebecca’s own unique personality is starting to come out. While Isabella is more physically active and running all over, Rebecca is more vocal than Isabella was at her age. She’s already using her own little voice, and at the same time, Isabella is just now

trade it for the world. March 16 is Absolutely Incredible Kids Day, and I want to share a few ways my life has been altered by having Isabella and Rebecca, as well as a few things I’ve learned along the way. What I know for sure is that any alone time I had before having kids is gone, effective immediately the moment they entered the picture! Now, I completely understand why

starting to talk our ears off! We can’t get her to stop these days, and while we can decipher some gibberish, we often just have to accept that it’s incomprehensible. We let her speak to her heart’s desire, though, and when it comes time for bedtime, she’d rather just chat than read a bedtime story. After three years of parenthood, I can confidently say I’ve learned a few things. I won’t lie and say I’ve figured it all out, but I think I’ve learned some lessons here and there. First of all, you have to understand the world revolves around them now, and that doesn’t have to be a bad thing. It’ll be difficult, but the payoff is all the incredible moments you make together.

my dad stayed in the bathroom all the time. There really is no other place in the world where you get that much privacy as a parent. Of course, parenthood has pros and cons, and lack of privacy is just one of the drawbacks of being responsible for tiny humans.

Kids have an endless supply of energy when, usually, you’re the one needing a fraction of that pep. While sometimes this boisterousness can rub off on you, it can also drain you! We were all walking in the grocery store the other day, and Priscilla

Second, you’ll have to accept that parenthood won’t be perfect or even pleasant 100% of the time. It’ll be demanding, and you’ll struggle, but you shouldn’t feel guilty for not enjoying yourself the whole time. There’s no need to stress over that since we’re all human, which brings me to my last lesson.

and I were simply astounded at how much energy Isabella has all the time and how tired we are all the time. Isabella is 3 years old, and Rebecca just turned 1. This means that energy levels are through the roof and are there to stay. Isabella doesn’t just walk from point A to point B. She has to run. She reminds me of a golden retriever that you have to keep calling to stay by your side and not to run too far. Life is just so exciting for the two of them, and no matter how hectic they can get, it’s still fascinating to watch them experience life.

Enjoy the good moments to the fullest, and don’t beat yourself up too much about the tough ones. No matter what lows you hit, the good times will always come back to you. Parenthood will make you laugh, and it’ll make you cry, but I promise you’ll spend more time laughing your head off than anything else. -William F. “Trey” Underwood, III

WD-40: Bug Repellant This Household Chemical Can Protect Your Home From Insects

WD-40 does just about everything. “If it moves but shouldn’t, use duct tape. If it won’t move but should, use WD-40” is practically an American proverb. It stops squeaks, cleans steel, and separates stuck objects. But it can do even more than that: Repel insects. Bugs don’t like the scent of WD-40, plus it can kill them by suffocation. Cheaper than most insecticides and infinitely more versatile, a can of WD-40 is perfect for keeping bugs out of your house. Doors and Windows Insects invade your house through every opening, including the crack in the front door. Keeping them out can be next to impossible unless you take precautions. One such safeguard is to spray WD-40 underneath the doorframe as if it were a barrier between your world and theirs. You should also spray it underneath windows and anywhere else they might come in. Roofs and Vents Insects love roofs. They can invade many nooks and crannies in your roof, such as vents and cracks, but WD-40 can help prevent it. Spray it on any points of access, including the gutter. Many gutters have hot air vents, a popular entrance for spiders. Try spraying the soffit — where the roof overhangs — to deter wasps and other creatures from building nests.

When and Where Not to Use WD-40 There are a few limitations to WD-40. It doesn’t keep out flying insects, so flies, bees, and other winged bugs can still get in. Also, WD-40 isn’t a solution for infestations, so call a professional exterminator if that’s your situation. WD-40 is poisonous, so don’t spray it in the kitchen. The chemical is also toxic to animals, including your pets. If you have animals, only use WD-40 on surfaces they can’t access, such as window frames, but be extra wary about where your cats hang out.

The Chemical for All Your Household Needs

WD-40 is a surprising solution for many household challenges. It makes snow shoveling easier, cleans bird droppings, and more. If

your household is a potential target for an insect invasion, a few sprays of WD-40 in key locations can help you protect the home from insects, ants, and possibly termites.

A Century of Change Tragedy Became a Milestone in Workers’ Comp History

While we can certainly confirm that our nation can do much better when it comes to workers’ rights, the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire is a stark reminder of the dire conditions that were once the norm. March 25 marks the anniversary of this tragedy, and we must recognize how far we’ve come in protecting workers’ safety while also acknowledging the ongoing work that needs to be done. The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory, located in the heart of Manhattan, was a bustling garment factory employing primarily immigrant teen girls. These young women worked 12 hours a day, every day of the week. On that fateful day in 1911, a fire broke out on the factory’s eighth floor, spreading quickly due to the unsafe working conditions and flammable materials. The workers found themselves trapped, with locked doors and inadequate fire escapes, leading to the devastating loss of 146 lives.

labor movement. It became a rallying cry for workers’ rights advocates and reformers, paving the way for significant changes in labor laws and workplace safety regulations. While significant progress has been made in workers’ compensation and workplace safety since 1911, challenges continue, and we see it nearly every day. Workers continue to face hazardous conditions in various industries, and workplace injuries and fatalities remain a reality for many. Additionally, the ever- evolving nature of work, such as the rise of the gig economy, has led to new challenges in ensuring labor protections and benefits. The anniversary of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire serves as a sad but essential reminder that we must remain vigilant in safeguarding workers’ rights and safety. We owe it to the memory of those who perished in that tragic fire and to the countless workers who still face risks on the job to uphold and strengthen workers’ compensation and labor protections. That’s why we do what we do!

The aftermath of this horrific incident shocked the nation and kickstarted the U.S.

SOME OF HISTORY’S QUIRKIEST MOMENTS

Grab your time travel hats! We are peeling back the layers of the past to reveal a few stories you won’t find in the history books, though history class would have been much more fun if they were! When Stillness Created History Imagine a bustling Parisian street filled with life and activity. A photographer is there, about to take the first known photograph of a person. But the only person still enough to photograph was a man getting his shoes shined — the exposure time then was several hours, almost a whole day’s work! So, the shoe-shining duo became unexpected celebrities in history as the subject of the first known photograph of humans in 1838. A Whistle Stop for Women’s Contributions When trains first thundered across the American landscape, some women wouldn’t ride them — a bizarre myth emerged

claiming that traveling at speeds of 50 mph would cause their uteruses to fly out of their bodies! Thankfully, at least two women saw past the strange notion to propose genuine improvements in the iron horses. In 1870, Eliza Murfey held 16 patents for her inventions to improve how bearings on train car wheels responded to their axles. In 1879, Mary Elizabeth Walton held two patents for reducing smokestack emissions. Tale of the Tallest Buildings The Great Pyramid of Giza is the oldest and last remaining of the original seven wonders of the world. For 4,000 years, this architectural marvel was the tallest building in the world. But all reigns must end, and in 1311, the Lincoln Cathedral in England claimed the crown. It was the tallest building for 237 years until its spire collapsed in 1548. However, it was still the tallest building ever built until the Ulm Minster in Germany set a new record in 1890 — it’s still the tallest church in the world.

Shorts Shook the World In the sizzling summer of 1937, something extraordinary happened on the streets of Toronto that changed fashion forever. Two daring women went out in public wearing shorts. Yes, shorts! The sight was so unusual that it drew overwhelming attention and even caused a car wreck! While this moment caused quite a stir, it wasn’t until after World War II that shorts gained popularity.
