The period begins when Coach No. 280 was built in 1880. The period ends when it retired from service on the Denver & Rio Grande Western railroad and was later placed on display in Central Park. Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad Caboose No. 04990 The period of significance for Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad Caboose No. 04990 is from 1880 to 1951. The period begins when Coach No. 280 was built as a long wooden box car for the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad. The period of significance extends through its rebuild as a caboose and ends when it retired from service on the Denver & Rio Grande Western railroad and dismantled in Alamosa.
