Anderson, F or ju s t a brief moment before we get into some other truths, I would like to share with you a word out of Psalm 9, verse 10: “And they that know Thy name will put their trust in Thee: for thou, Lord, hast not forsaken them that seek Thee.” It is very important that all believers come to know and understand the names by which God has been pleased to reveal Himself. Because God is called by various names especially in the Old Testament. You and I are not to con clude that these are employed only for the sake of variety because they all refer to the same glorious Person. They are not to be understood as re vealing only certain characteristics and attributes of the Lord. A careful study of the Word of God will reveal that Biblical names were never given care lessly but always with purpose and with real point and meaning. The memory of an incident happening at a certain place was usually pre served by the name that was given to
it in the Old Testament. For example the place where Abraham found the ram which was caught in the thicket at the time he was about to offer his son Isaac was called Jehovah-jireh as it is said to this very day. In the mount of the Lord it shall be seen Genesis 22, verse 14. The same thing was done with regard to individuals concerning Jacob. You remember it was Esau who said in Genesis 27, verse 36: “Is not he right ly named Jacob (the supplanter) for he hath supplanted me these two times: he took away my birthright; and, be hold, now he hath taken away my bless ing.” And then concerning die coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, the angel prophesied to Joseph in Matthew 1, verse 21, “And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.” Now it is my desire in this study to show how the Bible lays tremendous stress upon the names by which God has revealed Himself to men and wom en.
