Message from the Mayor by Mayor Josh Morgan mayor@london.ca 519-661-4920

new drainage for storms. I’m grateful for the strong relationships built with partners at all levels of government and the results they continue to deliver for London. Throughout our city, we’re unveiling great new park enhancements in our neighbourhoods, from Murray Park to Hastings, White Oaks and many more. The best part is that, along with improvements like new swings and play equipment, basketball nets and courts, pathways, and benches, we’re celebrating the occasion with community parties at each location. There are still several more to announce, so keep checking my social media and the city’s to join an event near you and see how we’re developing where we live and play. Along with our continuing downtown revitalization plan and the announcement of our new emergency services campus, there’s no summer downtime at City Hall, and that’s how we like it.

Hey London! I hope everyone has been having a great summer and enjoying the beautiful sunshine, whether you’re gardening at one of our public plots, taking in the fanta- stic events downtown and across our community, or trying to stay cool at one of the city’s pools and splash pads. Amid all this summer fun, our city continues to work hard on exciting projects and supporting those events, and I’m happy to share some of the latest: We recently celebrated the completion of the Adelaide Underpass, one of the largest infrastructure projects in the history of London, to meet the needs of our growing city and get Londoners where they need to go faster, safer and easier. It’s an example of how we’re investing in the everyday lives of Londoners, with the underpass helping us all say goodbye to train delays and get to work, school pickup and appointments faster. Sunningdale Road will be getting a facelift thanks to an $18 million boost from the province. Along with promising opportunities for housing, we’ll be expanding the roadway from two to four lanes, adding new sidewalks, lighting and cycling lanes, and installing

Bring your bikes and helmets and enjoy a variety of cycling activities and training for those learning to bike. Free bike bells (while supplies last), and outreach booths for a variety of groups will be in attendance. Learn more and RSVP by emailing sfranke@london.ca See you around the Village, Skylar Rosel Park Update: City staff undertook community engage- ment over the past few months to see if there was any interest in adding playground amenities to Rosel Park, in response to a request from the community. After two thorough surveys, it was determined the area residents currently prefer to keep the park as grassed open space. However, after a London Free Press article in August, there was an avalanche of submissions of emails, calls, social media messages and a 250+ petition in support of adding play equipment. At this point, it has been decided to add a minimal amount of play equipment for the community for 2026. I thank the residents for their engagement on this idea. Western Fair – September 5 – 14: I look forward to Western Fair every year. I love the rides, the food and the music! Fall is my favourite season – I can’t get enough of sweaters, autumn foliage and apple picking. For everyone heading back to school – I wish you success in your educational efforts! Thames Pool Relocation Update In response to a July 25, 2023, directive from London City Council, staff brought a report that explores the feasibility of constructing a new indoor pool within the same geographic catchment area as the decommissioned Thames Pool. The Parks & Rec Master Plan emphasizes shifting away from smaller, single-use facilities in favour of flexible, multi-use community hubs. It notes that indoor pools should be co-located with other amenities and provided at a ratio of one per 65,000 residents. The current PRMP identifies gaps in the Northwest and Central areas of the city and recommends future pools in those areas, which are next in line for construction. I am hopeful the future Central area aquatic facility will meet the needs of those who live to the north of Old South. The report uses four key criteria to evaluate feasibility: proximity (within 4 km of Thames Park), city ownership, a minimum size of 2.5 acres, and absence from environmentally sensitive or constrained lands. Six city-owned sites met the criteria: Basil Grover Park, Rowntree Park, Murray Park, Wellington Valley Park, Meredith Park, and Piccadilly Park. However, the only park large enough to have a multi-use facility – which is the direction we are moving towards, instead of single-use facilities – is Basil Grover Park. Despite Basil Grover Park not being in Ward 11 and having traffic concerns, I submitted a motion to direct staff to evaluate the feasibility of a future multi-use facility, including an indoor pool at this park, as part of the spring 2026 update to the Parks & Rec Master Plan. Feel free to submit input on this process. Thames Park Update: There have been multiple rounds of com- munity engagement on the redesign of the Thames Park, and you can see the most recent preferred design at getinvolved.london.ca/ thamespark. Please let me know if you have any further input, as this project will be moving forward to be implemented in 2026.

J. Bruce Parker asks... As a resident of Wortley Village and Old South for nearly 40 years, I can recall a time when the village was home to five antique shops and not much else. Over the years, Wortley Village has evolved and grown into a colourful fusion of the old and the new. In 2013, Wortley Village was listed in Great Places in Canada , and was stated by the

Extra, Extra! Students seize the stage for Grand Theatre High School Project: Disney’s Newsies Step into turn-of-the-century New York City, a time of skyscrapers and money makers, with Disney’s Newsies and the Grand Theatre High School Project. Famed for its imaginative and iconic dance sequences, this vibrant musical spectacular is based on the 1992 Disney motion picture, inspired by a true story, and features a Tony Award-winning score that includes songs such as Carrying the Banner , Seize the Day , and King of New York . This September, more than fifty of London and area’s brightest young artists will seize the Grand Theatre’s Spriet Stage, under the direction of one of Canada’s most exciting and in-demand theatre artists, Ray Hogg. Hogg and students are joined by a team of professional artists recruited from across the province – from Stratford, to Toronto, to Niagara, to London’s own top talent Matthew Atkins as Music Director, Lisa Wright as Costume Designer, and Joshua Quinlan as Set Designer.

Newsies isn’t just a musical – it’s a glimpse into the grit, courage, and determination of young people fighting for fairness in a world stacked against them. “It’s about young people fully stepping into their leadership in an era of incredible social cohesion in North American history. It’s about speaking truth to power, seeking justice, and demanding equality. It’s about embracing fear and vulnerability for the sake of imagination and vision.” – Ray Hogg, Director of Disney’s Newsies at the Grand Theatre. Disney’s Newsies plays on the Grand Theatre’s Spriet Stage from September 17 to 27, 2025. Single tickets range from $26 to $55 and are available by phone at 519-672-8800, in- person at the Box Office (471 Richmond Street), and online at grandtheatre.com/event/newsies. Don’t forget, Grand Theatre 2025/26 Season Subscribers save 15% when they add Disney’s Newsies to their season. Visit grandtheatre.com for tickets and more information. Let’s meet some of the Old South area students who are bringing the show to life:

It was great weather and great vibes as the 12th edition of the Wortley Jazz and Blues festival took over the village on August 17th. The music-loving faithful packed Wortley Road to see seven great bands perform at three stages. It was four hours of top-notch music accented by the foot stylings of members of London Lindy Hop. Neighbour of Note – Dinah Watts Dinah Watts grew up in Oakridge Acres, left London for 35 years to see the world, and is now happily back – living in Wortley Village with her husband David Pauloff since 2012. (We recognized David previously in the Wortley Villager for his gardening and community clean-up efforts). Dinah has a B.A. in English, Economics and Philosophy from McMasters University, and took classes in acting and directing, mostly from Toronto’s Equity Theatre. “As a kid, I went to school at Tecumseh for a while, so when- ever we visited Wortley Village, I had such a powerful sense of nostalgia and we started thinking about living here. And now we do and we’re so glad! I love just walking around the neighbourhood and admiring all the beautiful old houses and shops – and the gardens in summertime! And people are all so friendly here. There is always a “hello” from people we see – even teenaged boys have friendly greetings for us! I’ve been very lucky to be part of many productions – and to meet a ton of wonderful characters who are now great friends,” Dinah exclaims. “As a director,” says Dinah, “I’m always looking for plays that feature women, so I adapted an old chestnut: The Front Page. It is now SCOOPED! The original had a LOT of roles for men (boring), but in this adaptation we are featuring women playing the men – as men. The actors are having a ball finding their ‘male’ characters and it is quite hilarious hearing all those old sexist lines spoken by women. I think people are going to get a big kick out of it.” Above: Dinah played Vicky in the 2013 production of ‘Swing Dance’. Growing Gardens – Creating Community A favourite pastime for many Londoners is a walk through Wortley Village to admire the lawns and gardens. In addition to the gardens to be seen fronting homes and businesses, there are those where volunteers have planned and planted, watered and weeded, and mulched and pruned at local churches. The gardens at Calvary United Church first took root in May 2021 and have been expanding since. Community herb boxes sit on both Ridout and Garfield Streets, and last summer, a memorial bench for quiet reflection was added. The congregation takes pride in being included on the Pollinator Pathway Project’s pollinator map, and hopes to encourage the spirit, mind and body with their greening endeavours.

“As followers of Jesus, ser- vice lies at the heart of our cal- ling – and that service takes many forms,” said Rev. Mich- ael Bruce, Rector, St. James Westminster Anglican Church. “We offer heartfelt thanks to the dedicated members of the St. James Westminster com- munity who volunteer their time and energy to care for our bea- utiful gardens. Your efforts are a quiet blessing – not only to our church family, but to all who pass by.”

Happy 102nd George! George Beardshaw was fourteen when, in 1938, he emigrated from England through the Home Child Program to be an in- dentured farm worker in Canada. At eighteen, he enlisted in the military, serving with the Queen’s Own Rifles, and was captured and held in a P.O.W. camp in Holland. After the war, George lived in Wortley Village for more than 50 years until moving to the veteran’s care facility at Parkwood Hospital in 2021. Recently, George participated in the Backus-Page House Museum’s Canadian Wartime Homefront event, staged to bring awareness to what life was like on the Canadian homefront during the war. Below, he poses with the Miss War Worker Pageant ‘Bombshell Beauties”.

George turns 102 on September 14! Cards can be mailed to George Beardshaw, 224 Elgin Street, London, ON N5Z 2T8. “He’ll love hearing from old friends, neighbours and well- wishers,” said caretaker-friend Judi. Super Senior Day

How the Streets got their Names

Tecumseh Avenue was named for Chief Tecumseh, a leader of the Shawnee and of a large tribal confederacy for- med to unite the indigenous nations of the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley to defend their lands against westward settlement expansion. Tecumseh’s con- federacy allied with the British in the War of 1812, assisting in the capture of Fort Detroit. Tecumseh was killed in the Battle of the Thames near modern- day Chatham-Kent on October 1813. A legend, there are parks, streets, schools and towns named after him.

Wow, this summer seemed to be the hottest one I can recall, what a scorcher it was! I, for one, am thankful that September is here and hope we can all enjoy the outdoors a bit more this fall! Perhaps you have started commuting to school this fall or are starting to work in the office in person again this and your car might be due for service? Your neighbours at Wortley Auto Service can help get your maintenance schedule back on track! Most new cars are good at telling us when they need to be serviced, but that does not always mean just an oil change. The engineers who designed your car set service intervals for most of the items on it including items like the Tire Rotation, Engine Air and Cabin Filter Replacement, Fluid Top up and a thorough assessment of the overall condition of the car. These service items can become overlooked when you are getting a “rapid” oil change performed on your car at a drive through “quick lube” type of service facility. Most new cars are good at telling us that they need to be serviced, but, that does not always mean a simple oil change. Often, an oil change is accompanied with a tire rotation, Air and Cabin Filter replacement, uid top up and assessment of the overall condition of the car. At Wortley Auto Service, we perform a digital multi point inspection and send it right to your phone or computer! You can review the ndings, look at pictures of your car and have peace of mind knowing that your vehicle has been thoroughly inspected. At Wortley Auto Service, when we do routine service on your vehicle we consult the original manufacturers service schedule, but we also perform a digital multi point inspection and send it right to you via text messaging or e-mail. You can review the findings, look at pictures and videos of your car and have peace of mind knowing that your vehicle has been thoroughly inspected while it is in for service. If you are not sure about the specific time or mileage intervals that apply to your vehicle, look us up and we can help you navigate your cars needs specifically. Have a safe and happy September! In addition to our Digital Inspection, we consult the Factory Service Schedule speciic to your vehicle and make sure that we cover all the recommended service items in that table including coolant, transmission, brake uid and power steering uid service intervals. Very often, these service items can become overlooked when you are getting a “rapid” oil change performed. If you are not sure about the speciic time or mileage intervals that apply to your vehicle, feel free to drop in and chat with one of our team members or drop us a line. Wow, what a hot sticky and sunny summer we had! I for one, am glad that September is nally upon us along with the cool weather it brings. Hopefully, we can begin to resume our normal activities and get a sense of the “new normal”. Since COVID-19 changed most of our travel plans this year, many of us have been taking lots of daytrips in our cars and racking up the mileage. Perhaps your vehicle is due for its next scheduled maintenance interval? Your neighbours at Wortley Auto Service can help you with that!
