Hometown St. Thomas September 2025 Issue 72
Letter from the Editor It is often said that September is like a second New Year. School is back. Activities are back. Clubs are back. And in every household, the chaos and unpredictability of summer is replaced with the scheduled formality of making sure everyone gets to school, practice, and meetings on time. While we will miss the freedom summer grants us, let’s also embrace the structure of September. Plus, football is back! I’m often asked, ‘Who reads your magazine?’ People want to pin down exactly who they should prepare their messaging for. My answer is usually, ‘If you’re looking for someone under 30, I’m probably not the right product for you’. In my experience, it’s when a person starts having a family that local issues really matter. These days, that often happens around age 30 to 35. When you have a family, you suddenly care more about what’s going on in your community, your schools, your churches, and your local groups. I’ve noticed the same shift happens with shopping local. For me, the appreciation begins with your first job, especially if it’s with a local business. When you’re younger, trendy often trumps local. The big question is, ‘Is my drink Instagram-worthy?’ (For the record, drinks from the baristas at Streamliners Espresso always are.) You’re also looking for jeans with just the right label, regardless of where they’re made. But when you work at a local business, you start to notice the little things they do. You recognize the regular customers. You see the teams and events your company sponsors. You also start to understand the challenges owners face when people choose big box stores over the shop you work in, or when customers pick national brands instead of locally made products. It’s an eye- opener, and it makes you appreciate what ‘local’ truly means. Sometimes, a small and unexpected moment can shift your whole perspective. Back in June, Richard Haddow, local real estate agent and true supporter of local, returned home from coffee with friends to find a turtle had laid eggs right next to his porch.

Some people might be annoyed to see their lawn turned into a maternity ward, but not Richard. He embraced it, launching The Turtle Project to raise money for Another Chance Wildlife Rehabilitation. He’s also hoping the eggs hold on long enough to turn into a learning opportunity for a local school. Nature is a beautiful thing. I think that mama turtle made an excellent choice when she picked Richard’s yard. I guess the old saying is true; when laying eggs, as in real estate, it’s all about location, location, location.

PowerCo Launches Major Recruitment Campaign
EV facility once completed,” says Norman Wickboldt, Chief Human Resources Officer at PowerCo Canada. “Electrified transportation is the future, and these jobs offer long-term opportunities for Canadians to be a part of an exciting and innovative clean energy industry.” According to Tegan Versolatto, Media Relations & Content Specialist for PowerCo Canada, the company is recruiting for hundreds of positions in this first phase, including chemists, IT professionals, engineers, and sustainability experts. This is only the beginning of a much larger hiring effort that will continue to scale over time as the facility nears completion and production ramps up. While many of these positions require specialized skills, PowerCo is also focused on building its workforce through training and career development. “PowerCo is committed to training and development,” says Tegan. “We are investing in workforce skill-building to ensure employees are equipped for success in advanced manufacturing roles tied to EV battery production.”
St. Thomas is poised to become a powerhouse in Canada’s clean energy future, as PowerCo Canada officially kicks off its first recruitment campaign for the country’s largest-ever electric vehicle (EV) battery manufacturing plant. The $7 billion state-of-the-art facility, set to break ground in the coming weeks, will ultimately employ thousands and transform the local economy. This initial hiring phase will see hundreds of high-quality jobs made available, with positions ranging from technical specialists to professional support roles. Once operational in 2027, the plant will be a cornerstone of Canada’s EV battery production, placing the region at the forefront of a fast-growing global industry. “This recruitment campaign is a pivotal step forward as we move closer to breaking ground on what will be Canada’s largest

PowerCo is working closely with local governments, colleges, and community organizations to strengthen the regional talent pipeline. Although specific details of these partnerships have yet to be announced, Tegan confirmed that the company is actively engaged in community outreach and pursuing collaborations with educational institutions to support workforce readiness. Part of that strategy includes hiring co-op students from accredited institutions, ensuring that young people entering the workforce can gain hands-on experience in one of Canada’s most promising industries. Apprenticeships and training programs are also being developed to help workers, especially those without prior experience in EV manufacturing, transition into specialized roles. For St. Thomas, the benefits extend far beyond the walls of the gigafactory. Mayor Joe Preston sees the recruitment drive as the start of a new era for the city. “This isn’t just an economic boost; it’s a fundamental transformation for our community,” Mayor Preston says. “We’re proud to be the home for this exciting new chapter in Canada’s burgeoning EV battery manufacturing sector. This recruitment campaign opens the door to new, high-quality jobs for residents and opportunities to build lasting careers right here in our community.” A province-wide advertising blitz, including billboards in St. Thomas and nearby London, will support the recruitment push. The goal is to reach industry professionals, graduates, and job seekers eager to be part of Ontario’s clean energy future. Founded in 2022 as a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, PowerCo Canada was established to become a global battery champion and to steer all battery-related activities in North America. The St. Thomas gigafactory will be the company’s third and largest project worldwide. The $7 billion investment represents more than just a business expansion; it’s a long-term commitment to Canadian manufacturing, sustainable innovation, and community growth. PowerCo has already more than doubled its workforce to over 200 employees in the past year, signalling the speed and scale at which the company is moving.

Holy Angels’ Catholic Church Presents: Harvest Gala by Peri Hayes Holy Angels’ Catholic Church is hosting their Harvest Gala this November 1st at St. Anne’s Centre. Their Resident Historian, Blair Ferguson, offers history about the Church: “Holy Angels’ as it stands today, was built in 1911. The stained glass windows were manufactured in Bavaria and sent to St. Thomas [with a piece having been included in the World’s Fair]. The Sisters of St. Joseph’s convent and school were originally built in 1879, and had many additions over the years. There is still an original primary classroom in the basement of Holy Angels’, and the lower sacristy is also an old classroom from St. Joes. The school and the convent were demolished in 1994 when the new and large St. Joseph’s Catholic High School was built in the East end of the City.” Once moving to St. Thomas in 1995, Holy Angels’ became Maureen Bedek’s home parish. She passionately voices, “We are so grateful for this community, and want to celebrate the faith and joy that we have.” As Chair of the Fundraising Committee and Chair of the Gala, Maureen details, “Blair and I sit on the Holy Angels’ Fundraising Committee, which started in the fall of 2024. We started off with a $500,000 deficit and by May of 2025, the debt was paid. During a meeting with the Holy Angels’ Catholic Women’s League, we discussed hosting a celebration fundraiser. The Fundraising Committee supported this idea, and then a Planning Committee was set up. This is a fundraiser for the community, and for other parishes to join us and care for our spiritual home.” Along with Maureen, the Planning Committee includes the following members: Erin Galbraith, Mary-Ellen Hicknell, Fr.
John Johnson, Jenn Lewis, Cheryl Muma, Eva Patterson, Sharon Smith, Barbara Siebenmorgen, Tony Chacko Var- ghese and Melissa Ward.

While conveying what this upcoming Gala represents, Maureen refers to the ways in which the community of Holy Angels’ Church feeds the hungry, hosts bazaars, facilitates yard sales as a means to raise funds for local charities and more. “Holy Angels’ is the first Catholic Church in St. Thomas. This is a way to honour the history and pay homage to the people before us, as well as to maintain this Church for generations to come.” Holy Angels’ Catholic Church represents unity and the longevity of this community, with proceeds from this Gala being directed to the Church. This event is inspired by the autumn season, and will entail the following festivities with Gary Clarke as Emcee: live music and dancing; a variety of delicious food stations prepared by The Smokin’ Caboose and the Catholic Women’s League; a Live and Silent Auction, with Mayor Joe Preston offering his cooking expertise as one of the prizes. Maureen expresses gratitude for the generous donations, which include – but are not limited to – a glass of Great Lakes Farms’ hard apple cider for each guest upon arrival, and the pig donated for their feast. “We are so grateful for our sponsors -- The Knights of Columbus and Shawn Jackson Funeral Home, to name a couple.” Their doors will open at 6:30 pm, with assigned seating inside of the venue. Tickets cost $100 per individual --with a $50 tax receipt for each ticket -- available online through Zeffy or at St. Anne’s Parish Office. Moreover, a table of eight can be purchased for $760. Moreover, Holy Angels’ Church is offering a $50 tax receipt for each ticket. Sponsors and donation inquiries can be directed to their office at 519-631-3640.

Additionally, there are Smart TVs in the dining room and in each resident’s room for video calling loved ones and remaining connected. Says Executive Director, Brenda Fleming, “Statistically, most individuals desire to spend their final days at home, surrounded by those they love most. Recognizing this is not always possible, the Cottage provides a tranquil and calm space in a home-like atmosphere, and staff are already planning to expand services in the very near future to include options for day care for those remaining at home.” With approximately 35 care staff onboard, Hospice is currently funded to simultaneously provide 24/7 support to eight in- dividuals. Hospice aims to offer as much as possible for family members and friends to be able to remain on-site and close

A Ukrainian-Canadian Collaboration Hits All the Right Notes A family piano once filled with the songs in a Saskatoon living room has been transformed into a moving symbol of peace and resilience, thanks to a heartfelt community art project in St. Thomas. “Piano for Peace” is the work of the Elgin County Ukrainian Community (ECUC), a local group supporting Ukrainian fa- milies who have settled in the area since Russia’s 2022 full- scale invasion of Ukraine. The upright piano was donated by ECUC co-founder Patricia Maki, who says it carries the spirit of her homeland. “This piano has been in my family since the 1960s,” says Patricia. “It brought our family together -- siblings, cousins, friends -- singing and playing Ukrainian music. It has the spirit of Ukraine right in it.” Moved by memories, Patricia envisioned giving the piano a new life. “I had a dream,” she recalls. “Music heals. I thought, what if, through both music and art, this piano could become a symbol of peace and a way to express the pain, the resilience, and the hope of Ukrainians?” She reached out to long-time friend and artist, Mary Intven Wallace, who brought experience as a community artist and art therapist. Maxym Nechytailo, her second collaborator, is a Ukrainian-born artist living in Port Stanley, known for his work at the Art Emporium. “Patricia invited me to join,” says Maxym. “I became the designer of the main idea. We didn’t expect so many artists to join in, but people kept coming. It became more than an art piece — it became a movement.”

Painting began at the Elgin County Railway Museum, where artists, volunteers, and new-comers gathered to witness and par- ticipate in ‘art in action’. Using outdoor paint donated by the St. Thomas Public Art Centre, the piano was transformed in public view. “There was so much laughter and joy,” said Mary. “While painting, people forgot their troubles. That’s the power of community art, it heals, it unites.” The piano features Canadian and Ukrainian symbols, representing strong cultural ties and shared hope for peace. “In Ukraine, it’s not uncommon to see a lone piano standing after a bombing, where someone will sit and play,” notes Patricia. “It’s a form of peaceful resistance. A way to hold onto culture, iden- tity, and language.” The ‘Piano for Peace’ is mounted on a platform for easy transportation and is now touring the city. Its first stop is Home Hardware in St. Thomas for a three-week stay, followed by a special reveal event at Bistro and a possible concert fundraiser at Sitting on floor: Vinny Koval (artist participant/ family member). Second row left to right: Iryna Poliakova (artist participant), Iryna Koval (wife of Maksym and artist participant), Maksym Nechytailo (piano designer and lead Ukrainian artist), Mary Intven Wallace (lead Canadian artist), Patricia Maki (Piano Peace Project coordinator/ piano donor).
Zesty’s. “We’re hoping to create some, ‘Where’s the piano now?’ buzz to draw people to these locations,” says Patricia. “It’s not just about raising awareness but also raising funds for humanitarian aid in Ukraine.” Unlike large charities, ECUC works directly with trusted contacts to provide supplies and support to families both in Ukraine and to those settling in Elgin County. “We know exactly where the money goes,” says Patricia. “We’ve even sent medical supplies and tourniquets to the front lines.” The project is also about healing here at home. ECUC offers wellness days for Ukrainian women, community events for fa- milies, and a space for newcomers to feel supported. “This piano complements our work,” says Mary. “Art is a universal language; it connects people across borders, cultures, and experiences.” Funding for the project came from ECUC benefactor, Dr. Ian Begg, with moving assistance from Freeman the Mover and other local businesses. Community partners include the Elgin County Railway Museum, CASO Station, City Hall, the Chamber of Commerce, and the St. Thomas Downtown Development Board. Now being varnished, the piano is set to continue its journey across the city. Plans are in the works for a winter indoor lo- cation, followed by another tour next summer. “This is a ripple effect,” Patricia explains. “It starts with a piano, but it’s really about connection, compassion, and the universal need for peace.” Anyone interested in hosting the Piano for Peace, making a do- nation, or joining the initiative is encouraged to connect through ECUC’s social media or upcoming community events.

At Kate’s Cafe, hearty soups, chilli, sandwiches and more are prepared. Kate’s own line of nutritious granola is available in an array of 12 flavours, tending to sell at a rapid pace. Created with a gluten-free base, select options of Kate’s granola are also dairy and nut-free. Their Apple Raisin Granola is a popular option, and rather appropriate for the current season. A diabetic, low-sugar option is included on Kate’s menu, made with almond butter and maple syrup. Moreover, ‘My Morning Coffee’ features medium roast and ‘Cafe Mocha’ includes the coffee that Kate sells in-store -- which is also available in bags. Kate herself being gluten-intolerant, has admittedly experienced being in public with friends and seeking something fulfilling on the menu for her to enjoy. All of their rice noodles, fried rice and stir fries are celiac-friendly. They offer fresh rolls, curry cooked in coconut curry sauce, and tamari sauce in substitution for soy sauce. Pad Thai comes with your choice of beef, chicken, shrimp or tofu, and one of their stir fry dishes is served on rice with gluten-free, mushroom-based oyster sauce -- “which is

Taco House Co. Corporation Owner, Aurora Alcocer, delightedly discusses Taco House Co. and their expansion this month with the new Tortilleria as their supplier. Taco House Co. will continue to operate as a restaurant, while the next door unit is their production space for high-quality, gluten-free tortillas -- with options available in retail and for wholesale. Their full menu is gluten-free, with no additives to the meat or conservatives containing wheat and soy. As their clientele come with celiac allergies, Aurora assures that this is a completely safe environment with zero cross-contamination. Their three flavours include tortilla with masa, which is described as the dough that comes directly from the corn. Their non-GMO corn is sourced locally, being high in fibre and gluten-free. A second option is made with corn flour, and another contains cactus and flaxseed -- resulting in a striking green hue.
Seed Confections At Seed Confections on Ross Street, Gen Kroeker continues to present her naturally gluten-free macrons with diverse and ‘rotating’ flavours -- always available in-store. The traditional, French macrons are honoured at Gen’s local business, made with almond flour. As well, they are delighted to offer a dairy and gluten-free option. Visually beautiful with hand-painted detailing on a selection, their menu this season features apple pie, chai and pumpkin spice for your autumnal palette.

From There to Here: Rob and Carol Simonds
When Rob and Carol Simonds made their move to St. Thomas in 2020, it wasn’t just a new chapter; it was the culmination of a five-year journey that started with a simple question from their daughter: “Have you ever thought about relocating in your retirement?” Originally from Nantwich, a Tudor town in Cheshire, England, Rob and Carol had no immediate plans to cross the Atlantic. But after their daughter moved to Canada in 2008 and married a Londoner in 2010, thoughts of retirement near family began to take root. That seed grew slowly. “It hit home when we had to cancel a holiday due to illness,” Rob recalls. “I think that’s when our daughter started thinking seriously about having us closer.” Their immigration journey was anything but straightforward. What began as a standard parent and grandparent sponsorship process quickly changed into a lottery-based system. After missing out the first time, they were finally selected and approved in 2019. They sold their house in the UK and arrived in Canada in October 2020 — masked, quarantined, and still waiting on their furniture. Their daughter and son-in-law helped them purchase a home in St. Thomas. “We had their phones and a realtor walking us through the house virtually,” said Carol with a laugh. “It was a leap of faith.” Initially, they considered settling in London to be close to family, but the traffic and pace didn’t suit them. “St. Thomas felt just right,” says Carol. “Big enough, but not too big.” They were particularly drawn to the sense of space and the city’s slower rhythm. “ Since arriving, they’ve immersed themselves in the community. From historic walking tours on Talbot Street to an active schedule with the Seniors’ Centre, fitness classes, and the Railway City Cycling Club, Rob and Carol have made the most of retirement life. “We wanted to get out there and meet people,” Rob said. “And we have.”
They’ve also discovered some local favourites: shopping at Briwood Farm Market; enjoying fish and chips at Your Fish & Chips; sipping craft beer at Railway City Brewing and Caps Off, and relaxing by the lake in Port Stanley. “That’s like a holiday for us,” enthuses Carol. “It reminds us of Devon.” While they still cherish their British roots—along with a proper cup of tea and a good ale, Rob and Carol say it’s the friendships they’ve made here that truly make St. Thomas feel like home. “Canadians really are as friendly as they say,” Rob adds. “We’ve built a network of friends we never expected. It’s made all the difference.” Most recently, Rob and Carol proudly became Canadian citizens. “We couldn’t have chosen a better place,” Rob notes. “The people have been so welcoming, and the sense of community is real. We’re lucky to call St. Thomas home.”
