Jennifer Jackson: Bluefields Psychotherapy for First Responders by Peri Hayes Jennifer Jackson had been working for over 25 years in the financial sector, when she became aware of the emotional stressors impacting her clients. “I got to know my clients, and I noticed that certain patterns started emerging. I didn’t have the language at the time, but I wanted to know how I could help my clients, and this led me on a search to bridge the gap.” Desiring to cultivate a space wherein people feel safe and seen, Jennifer pursued her Master’s in Counselling Psychology and brought insight from her previous career into Bluefields Psychotherapy through launching her practice in May of 2024. Specializing in trauma for first responders, Jennifer describes, “How this came to be is through the realization that I want to be the voice for my clients in between, not the voice at the end. Our first responders are running toward danger, rather than away -- which exposes them to trauma. There is a stigma surrounding therapy as a weakness, and I want people to know how to access this care.” “Generally speaking, I take a very integrative and collaborative approach to therapy through my trauma-informed lens.” Jennifer begins her process with a 20-minute consultation for each client, geared toward learning, assessing and creating a treatment plan. In addition to talk-therapy, Jennifer’s focus with first responders surrounds EMDR or ART – of course, protecting their privacy if concerned about professional confidentiality – while releasing that which is stuck in the nervous system, and referencing a wide cross-section of resources for clients to explore while working toward their goals.
“My excitement is sitting down with a client and placing our ‘goal posts’, as I call them, so that we know where we’re going. Then, seeing this person moving from living to thriving — which will look different for each person — and their face lighting up during a breakthrough; learning and growing -- this fulfills me.” While Jennifer’s sessions are exclusively virtual at this time, she continues to offer flexibility as a means for clients to be in the comfort of their own space. On-stream to meet every client’s preference, Jennifer reveals potential for expansion to in-person sessions -- though she has not received the volume for that to happen this year.
As Jennifer concludes, “It is very important to me that my clients are taking care of all their life domains -- physical, emotional, spiritual, psychological and personal. Self-care is foundational, and therapy is part of self-care.” To connect with Jennifer, phone 226-884-7082 or email thrive@bluefieldspsychotherapy.ca.
