Elgin County Studio Tour Features: Jennifer Gerardi-Fraser by Peri Hayes Jennifer Gerardi-Fraser (Jen) was drawn toward art from a young age, as she voices her nostalgia: “Glue and paper were the currency of my childhood.” “In 2008, a friend invited me to a beginner pottery class at the London Clay Art Centre (now Clayworx). I fell in love with clay instantly, and have been working with ceramics ever since. Pottery combines creativity with process and chemistry, which speaks to my background in chemical engineering. It challenges me, grounds me and brings me joy.” Jen is inspired by the trees, leaves, wildlife and her natural surroundings. As a potter, Jen predominantly works with mid- fire stoneware and porcelain. With a mix of hand-building and wheel-throwing, Jen tends to prefer the former: “It gives me more freedom to play with shapes and textures, and I love the variety of forms it allows. There’s something satisfying about building a piece from the ground up, slowly and intentionally. A lot of my work is hand-painted with underglazes, which is where my obsession with colour comes in. I lean toward bright colours and whimsical decorations that feel playful, cheerful and a little unexpected.”
