National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in the City of St. Thomas by Peri Hayes Mayor Joe Preston announces, “We are discussing the Truth and Reconciliation Event – Orange Shirt Day – this September 30th, here in the City of St. Thomas.” Proceeding to evolve plans each year, the City is determined to ensure that this event is accessible and welcoming for those attending. Taking place in front of City Hall, Mayor Joe announces that Talbot Street and Mondamin Street, the side street beside City Hall, will implement a road closure as a means to create a spacious experience for people. Lasting approximately one hour in front of City Hall, this event will commence at 12:00 pm with a proclamation and raising of the flag. Mayor Joe Preston will speak, along with offerings from Indigenous speakers, artists, drummers, educators and more. “This is an important event,” Mayor Joe states. Thereafter, the streets will re-open and the event will transition to the St. Thomas Public Library on Curtis Street, situated behind City Hall. “We are moving there for further celebration, including storytimes and more in the afternoon. We are pleased to be collaborating with and involving the centre block of our downtown. At the Library, there will be traditional Indigenous food and drink while supplies last.” Also open to the public will be an educational film screening at this venue. Appreciative of ongoing partnership, Mayor Joe exclaims, “Our Library is a great gathering place for events.” The Mayor expresses further gratitude for those contributing to this vital event: “There is a wonderful community group helping to
