EMBRY-RIDDLE AERONAUTICAL UNIVERSITY
LIFTING LIMITS: COMMERCIAL SPACE ENTERPRISE AT EMBRY-RIDDLE
Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and its thriving Research Park are accelerating entrepreneurship to create high-paying jobs and build the commercial space workforce of the future. Cape Canaveral, Florida, the nation’s most active spaceport, is the epicenter of a global space economy that reached $447 billion in 2020. Embry-Riddle’s Research Park works to ensure that successful aerospace businesses start, grow and stay in Florida. We are turning transformative ideas into job growth and economic progress. Two dozen Research Park companies have provided 123 high-paying jobs and 173 student internships thus far (2017-22). Embry-Riddle Research Park companies have also raised an impressive $46.7 million. Faculty and students are collaborating with industry to free commercial space from limitations, with solutions focused on: Full Life Cycle Operations – Students are specializing in the many different phases of the Space Operations Life Cycle, including development of effective green propellants, propulsion system design, orbital mechanics, electromagnetic spectrum management, space weather forecasting, risk analysis and regulatory compliance. Life Support and Sustenance – Students are creating habitats meant to sustain life in space and provide protection against both radiation and space debris. They are also envisioning AI-based systems, which not only aim to sustain life through data-oriented decision-making but also provide feedback on human performance in order to improve next-generation systems. Cost-Effective, High-Precision Instrumentation – Our students are developing hardware alternatives that can reliably withstand harsh operating conditions in space to perform instrumentation needs — such as sensing and communications, capture and maintenance and debris removal.
