The Boeing Center for Aviation and Aerospace Safety was founded to take on aviation safety’s most pressing challenges. Through research, education, and industry engagement, the Center leverages Embry-Riddle’s faculty of more than 1,300 to solve hard problems and share new knowledge. The Center’s mission is accomplished through four pillars: Research // Conducting relevant and impactful research to enhance safety. Areas of emphasis include: AI Applications in Safety Human Performance Safety Culture Safety Data Analytics Safety Management Systems System Safety Enhancing the Student Experience // Supporting industry-leading safety education at the undergraduate and graduate levels at all three campuses. Programs include: Safety-related internships Opportunities to engage in funded research Student-moderated Safer Skies guest speaker series Guest lectures with industry experts Opportunity to present original research at Safety Research Symposium Professional Education // Providing highly specialized executive education in support of aviation and aerospace safety. Custom course development available. Courses include: Accident and Incident Investigation Data Analytics and AI in Aviation Safety

Directing the center are two highly qualified aviation professionals. Executive Director, Honorable Robert L. Sumwalt , is a highly distinguished aviator and former chairman of the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). Associate Director, Kristy Kiernan, Ph.D., is a former Coast Guard aviator, where she served as aviation safety officer and lead pilot for technical issues in the Falcon 20. Her current research investigates the positive contribution of human performance to aviation safety.
