Compressed Truth Repentance is that golden key that opens the palace of eternity.—M ilton . Being in Christ, it is safe to forget the past; it is profitable to be diligent in the present; it is possible to be sure o f the fu ture.—A lexander M aclaren . When the gospel comes, light comes; when it comes to any place, when it comes to any soul, it makes day there. Light is discovering, it is directing; so is the gos pel.—M atthew H enry . When I get up in the morning, I get a crumb of a text, and meditate thereon. By the time I am dressed, it has become the size of a loaf.—H enry D yer , in The Keswick Calendar. Bringing Her Sheaves One day there was a burst o f choral singing away down the long street leading to the river. The occasion was the arrival o f a native Christian woman, who was just entering the town after a month’s journey on foot. She had come to report what she had done for the Lord Jesus in her district, and her hands were filled with tiny straws, done up in bundles neatly tied with bark rope. .These bundles constituted a record- book o f a novel sort that the African has been using for centuries—a straw for an item, another straw for another item, and so on. For each case of professed con version, there was a straw cut, and the bundles of straw looked for all the world like miniature sheaves. The straws were handed over to the elders to be counted, and the number was six hundred and sixty. —D an C rawford , in Thinking Black. Siamese New Year Throwing water at each other is one way the Siamese celebrate their New Year. Neils Nedergaard, M.D., a Presbyterian missionary at Bangkok, Siam, describes it thus: “ It was old style New Year, which was interesting. They wish you ‘Happy New Year’ by throwing clean cool water on you, which- feels most refreshing on a hot a f ternoon. I was soaked twice. O f course, I played the game, and really it was not un pleasant. They did not do it except during the hottest hours. “What can be more refreshing than a gallon o f cool water down one’s back when the road is simmering hot and the tempera ture from 100 to 160 degress in the shade and sun?”—T he P resbyterian . Light Through Darkness It sometimes takes darkness to reveal the light. A metallurgist and his son were exploring a lead mine in England when their light went out. In the darkness that followed, they noticed a faint glimmer coming from the rock. When samples of this rock were sent to the Paris Radium Institute, it was discovered that the rock contained an appreciable amount o f ra dium. It often happens that in the dark ness o f sorrow and difficulties, the light from God’s W ord shines into the life o f one who in the brightness o f earthly happi ness has failed to see its glory. “The en trance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple” (Psa. 119:130).—T he B ible T oday .

“A short time ago I began to think about an income for the future. Experience taught me that some in vestments were not satis factory and secure. I had very little to expend but that little meant much to me. Safety therefore was the first requisite.” — M. P. . . . New York

“ In these days of uneasiness about investments, it is so comfortable to know that my annuity agreement with the American Bible Society is absolutely safe and that I can depend on the pay ments from it. And I know that all the time my money is doing good.” — A. D. . . . Illinois

Safety *s one °f the many satis- Sw 9 factory features possessed by the

annuity agreements issued by the American Bible Society. Instituted in 1816 this organization has for over eighty years been issuing annuity agreements and has never missed a single payment. Many testimonials similar to those above have been received expressing great satisfac tion in the freedom from anxiety made possible by the safe character of the Society’s annuities. GSgwfgi-d-wm i i l i f f i The safety feature of an Ameri- can gjjjjg Society annuity agree ment is further enhanced by the assurance that on through the years it will continue to do good. Great satisfaction comes to the Christian in knowing that because of his annuity the comfort, the counsel and the challenge of the Scriptures will be distributed across the earth through the service of the American Bible Society. “ Mrs. S. and I are thoroughly pleased with the annuity agreement of your Society which we hold. We know that it is safe, and that the money which we have placed with you on the annuity basis will return to us a steady and reliable income no matter how long we may live. We like to think also that when we no longer need this income the principal will be used for the translation, publica tion and distribution of the Scriptures, a work so essential to the Christian missionary program.” — J. S. . . . Oklahoma
