not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, 1 will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness” (Isa. 41:10). Peter walked upon the water so long as his eyes were fixed entirely upon Jesus, but when he saw the boisterous waves, and thought about the roaring o f the wind, he began to sink. Elijah failed at his strong est point, and he who, led by the Spirit, ran twelve miles straight toward Jezebel, now, under the impulse o f his own spirit, ran one hundred miles in the other direc tion, because of the fear of her that was allowed to dominate his thoughts. Oh, it is absolutely fatal to let our gaze be held by our surroundings, our difficulties, our dan gers, and so on, and forget to look up. If we look within or around or down at our feet, we shall always find ample reason for fear. But the upward look will keep us calm-and confident, if it shows us God. —F. J. H orsefield . JANUARY 18 “I f thou const believe, all things are possible to him that believeth” (Mk. 9:23). Faith and fear are sworn enemies. “ I was afraid and hid thy talent in the earth” is the testimony of failure. “All things are possible to him that believeth” is the testi mony o f victory. Fear makes us cowards. Faith makes us Conquerors. Faith and fear forever stand in contrast. God deals in faith. Satan deals in fear. Until that day our parents disobeyed God, did they know the sense o f fear? Since that day, the shadow of fear has cast itself across the pathway o f sinning humanity. “ I was afraid and hid” was the trembling con science-stricken reply man made to His Maker, as the antagonizing shadow o f sin haunted his footsteps. Nothing but the perfect love of God is able to defeat this demon of fear, and give man a conquering, undaunting faith. What an enemy fear is ! It is a treacherous robber that steals the joy from our life, the smile from our countenance, the song from our soul, the courage from our hearts. It leaves us helpless dnd useless amid the jargon voices of doubt, distrust, discouragement, defeat, and disaster. What a conqueror faith is ! What mighty victories it has won 1 What great continents it has discovered! What songs it sings ! What usefulness it brings 1 There they stand— fear and failure; faith and victory. Which will lead? —H. J. T. R u m s e y .

W e listen for Thy tread. Hope watching stands, her storm-tossed vessel steering; But the dark sky vouchsafes no sign' of Thine appearing. “A little while”— faith reads the promise over, While louder roars the storm; She gazes keener-eyed than any lover O’er the night blackened surges to discover Some vestige of Thy form ; And oft, the drear nightwatch to beguile, Repeats, “A little while,” He said, “A lit tle while.” But love, with instinct truer, deeper, keener, Nor sign nor vision craving, Garnering Thy precious words up like a gleaner The golden ears; with heart and brow serener, For all the temptest’s raving, Feeling Thee near, and conscious of Thy smile, Counts the slow-rolling ages but “a little while.” —E. C. JANUARY 16 "For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight o f glory " (2 Cor. 4:17). Sir Francis Drake, being in a dangerous storm in the Thames, was heard to say, “Must I, who have escaped the rage o f the ocean, be drowned in a ditch 1” W ill you, experienced saints, who have passed through a world of tribulation, lie down and die of despair, or give up your profes sion because you are at the present mo ment passing through some light affliction? Let your past preservation inspire you with courage and constrain you to brave all storms for Jesus’ sake. •—L ife of F a it h A l m a n a c . JANUARY 17 "Fear thou not; for I am with thee : be

JANUARY 14 “ He hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God” (Psa. 40:3). The best music has been rendered un der trouble. The first duet that I know any thing of was given by Paul and Silas when they sang praises to God and the prisoners heard them. The Scotch Covenanters, hounded by the dogs of persecution, sang the Psalms o f David with more spirit than they have ever been rendered since then. In this day of gospel sunlight and freedom from all persecution, there ought to be a great multitude of men and women willing to sing the praises of God . . . Have1you ever noticed the construction of the human throat as indicative of what God means us to do with it? In only an ordinary throat and lungs there are four teen direct muscles and thirty indirect mus cles that can produce a very great variety o f sounds. What does that mean? It means that you should sing I Do you sup pose that God who gives you such a musi cal instrument as that intends to keep it shut? Suppose some great tyrant should get possession of the musical instruments o f the world and should lock up the organ o f Westminster Abbey and the organ of Lucrene and all the Other great musical in struments of the world—you would call such a man as that a monster; and yet you are more wicked if, with the human voice, a musical instrument o f more wonderful adaptation than all the musical instruments that man ever created, you shut it against the praise of God.— T . The vast train of expectant years grows vaster; The deep, dark tide of sin flows wider, faster;
