JANUARY 22 “ There was no more sea” (Rev. 21:1). Human life below has more sea than land. It is not a connected continent—a brotherhood o f souls; it is a multitude of little islands divided by stormy waves. There is a great gulf fixed between my life and the life o f my brother—the gulf of self-interest; I cannot pass over to him, and he cannot pass over to me... And the secret o f our separation is the secret also o f our unrest, W e live in perpetual storms because we live in perpetual selfishness;

JANUARY 19 “ Take therefore no thought for the mor- rozif’ (Matt. 6:34). Would it not be better to leave tomor row with God? That is what is troubling men—tomorrow’s temptations, tomorrow’s difficulties, tomorrow’s burdens, tomor row’s duties. Martin Luther in his auto biography says, “ I have one preacher that I love better than any other upon earth; it is my little tame robin, which preaches to me daily. I put his crumbs upon my win dow sill, especially at night. He hops onto the sill when he wants his supply, and takes as much as he wants to satisfy his need. From thence he always hops on to a little tree close by, and lifts up his voice to God and sings his carol o f praise and gratitude, tucks his little head under his wing and goes fast asleep, and leaves to morrow to look after itself. He is the best preacher that I have on earth.” ■—H. W . W e b b - P e p l o e . Moment by moment, I’m kept in His love; Moment by moment, I’ve life from above; Looking to Jesus till glory doth shine, Moment by moment, O Lord, I am thine. Never a trial that He is not there, Never a burden that He doth not bear, Never a sorrow that He doth not shar?; Moment by moment I’m under His care. —D. W . W h it t l e . JANUARY 20 “For we are . . . created in Chirst Jesus unto good zvorks, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them” (Eph. 2:10). It is one thing to work for God; it is another to have God work through us. We are often eager for the former; God is always desirous of the latter. . . . It is God who is working to evangelize the w orld; it is God who has laid the plans for it; it is God who has the power to suc cessfully execute them. Now the God who is the ruler o f the universe does not want us to plan and worry and work for Him. For while He appreciates our purposes to ward Him, yet they may be all athwart His purposes for, and through, us. What He wants is not our plans, but our lives, that He may work His plans through us. God will certainly do this through every ' life that is yielded to Him, if we simply trust Him so to do, and follow Him as He leads us on. God has an ordained plan of good works in Christ Jesus, and as each member o f the body o f Christ yields him self or herself to Him absolutely to do His ordained works, He will give to, and re veal to, that individual member his or her particular works. — J a m e s H. M c C o n k e y . JANUARY 21 “Looking unto Jesus, the author and fin isher o f our faith” (Heb. 12:2). Christian! in all thy troubles, look unto God, and be saved. In all thy trials and afflictions, look unto Christ, and find de liverance. In all thine agony, in all thy re pentance for thy guilt, look unto Christ, and find pardon. Remember to put thine eyes heavenward, and thine heart heaven ward, too. Bind round thyself a golden chain, and put one link o f it in the staple in heaven. Look unto Christ; fear not. There is no stumbling when a man walks with his eyes up to Jesus. He that looks at Christ walks safely.—C. H. S p u r g e o n .

the wave of our thoughts rolls back upon ourselves. But in that higher life which the seer o f Patmos saw, the gulfs were all dried up, and the separation of land from land appeared no more. Human nature became to his gaze a continent. Men lost their isolation and ran together into unity. They saw eye to eye, they felt heart to heart, they wrought hand to hand, and the glory o f the Lord was revealed because all flesh could see it together. — G eorge M a t h e s o n ,
