The Archaic Period and the rise of the polis The time from 750 to 490 BCE is called the Archaic Period. Many changes happened in Greece. Pan-Hellenic events like the Olympic Games helped unite Greek culture. Around 750 BCE, Greeks set up colonies in Italy, Sicily and the Black Sea due to a lack of farmland. By the early 600s BCE, independent city-states, called poleis , like Athens, Sparta and Corinth, developed and often fought for land. 4.4 SkillBuilder activity CHRONOLOGY 1.
