Who are the ýgures shown helping Heracles in the scene? Did you know? InGreek mythology , Heracles was a strong hero, not a god. As a baby, he strangled poisonous snakes. As a youth, he killed a ýerce lion. He did many great deeds, like capturing Cerberus, the three-headed dog of the underworld. He even held up the sky for a time. He died after putting on a poisoned robe, which made him throw himself into a ýre. The gods then took him to live with them on Mount Olympus.
SOURCE4 This metope comes from the Temple of Zeus at Olympia. It shows a part of Heracles’ 12 labours. In the scene, Atlas gives Heracles the apples of the Hesperides. At the same time, Heracles and Athena hold up the sky and the world.
