Buddhism explained Buddhism was founded by Siddhartha Gautama, a Hindu prince, in the sixth century BCE. After witnessing suffering in his kingdom, he renounced his riches to seek deeper truths. He lived as a hermit for seven years and then began teaching the Four Noble Truths. He became known as ‘the Buddha’, meaning ‘the Enlightened One’.
