9.12.1 What is a cyclone? Tropical cyclones (called hurricanes in the Americas and typhoons in Asia) can cause severe property damage and loss of life. About 80 to 100 tropical cyclones occur worldwide each year, mainly in tropical coastal areas around the equator. Australia experiences around 11 cyclones yearly; four or five will make landfall (meaning they will reach land).
