Safety High crime rates plague Dhaka’s poor areas, including gang violence, land grabbing, crimes against women and children, and crimes related to gambling, drugs, alcohol and illegal weapons. The limited and unreliable police presence fails to provide adequate protection. Education Primary education is compulsory, but the government is unable to provide enough schools and resources for the increasing population. Many students do not attend school all the time because their families need them to earn money, often because their parents do not have jobs. In spite of the tough conditions, the education rate in the city is slightly higher than in rural areas, and the national literacy rate is about 78 per cent.
