10.11.5 Tourism Port Douglas, 60 kilometres north of Cairns, was a busy mining port in the 1870s with a population of more than 10 000 people. Environmental concerns saw mining stop and by the 1960s, only 100 lived there. Improvements in roads and þights in the 1980s brought tourists to the warm weather, beautiful beaches and the World Heritage areas of the Great Barrier Reef and Daintree rainforest. The permanent population is now around 3650, but it can double in size during peak holiday season (May–September).
