LESSON 10.12 What is the connection between liveability and sustainable living?
LEARNING INTENTION By the end of this lesson you should be able to: • explain the connection between liveability and the environment • explain the interconnection between liveability, sustainability and ecological footprint.
Tune in Did you know that sustainable living is linked to our ecological footprint? 1. Develop a deýnition of the terms ‘sustainable living’ and ‘ecological footprint’. 2. Mind map a list of features that help determine our ecological footprint. 3. Categorise each feature as either having a positive or negative impact on our ecological footprint.
FIGURE1 Our ecological footprint comprises many different elements, including how we power our homes.
10.12.1 Sustainability Australian cities often rank high in liveability, but liveability is not the same as sustainability (see FIGURE2 ). Sustainability focuses on how well a community is meeting current needs and expectations, and how well it will contribute to meeting future needs. Sustainability indicators include: • low working hours to meet basic needs • easy access to education • satisfactory and affordable housing • recycling and composting • reliable transport • low emissions and high air quality • biodiversity • high renewable energy use and low non-renewable energy use • good water, forests and marine health • ability to respond to disasters.
