LESSON 10.13 How can liveability be improved?
LEARNING INTENTION By the end of this lesson you should be able to: • identify reasons for the uneven distribution of food across the world and how this impacts liveability • explain how livability can be enhanced at a local scale.

SEVERE FOOD INSECURITY This person has: • run out of food • gone an entire day without eating at times during the year.
This person has: • insufficient money or resources for a healthy diet • uncertainty about the ability to obtain food • probably skipped meals or run out of food occasionally.

1. Explain the connection between hunger and food insecurity. 2. Mind map reasons why people in some parts of the world have more than enough to eat while people in other regions are starving. 3. Discuss potential solutions to reduce global food inequality.
10.13.1
Distribution of hunger
Access to enough food is a strong measure of liveability. Although globally we produce enough food to feed everyone, about 1 in 11 people do not have enough to eat. Approximately 733 million people globally are undernourished . Many children in poorer countries are underweight and do not have enough food to maintain proper health. In 2000, 33 per cent of children worldwide faced chronic malnutrition. This ýgure has fallen to 20 per cent today. Three-quarters of all hungry people live in rural villages in Asia and Africa (see FIGURE2 ), mainly relying on agriculture with no other source of income or employment. They often consume one-quarter to one-half of the recommended daily calories and small amounts of water. Lack of rain can hinder crop growth and affect livestock feed, but other factors also contribute to hunger, as outlined in FIGURE3 .
SkillBuilder discussion Geographical inquiry 1. Look at FIGURE2 . Describe the patterns of rates of undernourishment over time. 2. Identify where most hungry people live and their primary sources of food. 3. What might affect crop
growth and increasing hunger besides rainfall?
