LESSON 11.2 Civics and Citizenship concepts and skills

LEARNING INTENTION By the end of this SkillBuilder you should be able to:

• identify and explain the Civics and Citizenship concepts and skills • explain why the study of Civics and Citizenship is important.

11.2.1 Introduction Civics and Citizenship is grounded in the core concepts of active citizenship both local and global; community, identity and diversity; democratic institutions and systems; democratic values ; and legal systems.

You will learn how to be a responsive and informed participant in civic life for the betterment of your community. You will learn about values, characteristics, rights and responsibilities common to a community’s members, and which bring the community together. You will learn about the political, legal and civic institutions and systems that underpin our democratic system in Australia. Our key democratic values include popular sovereignty , consent of the governed, equality, freedom, pluralism , protection of minorities and government accountability. This includes learning about a person’s sense of who they are, and acknowledging Australia as a culturally diverse, multi-faith and cohesive society. You will learn about the mechanisms for order, justice and obedience, acceptance of the right to establish courts and make laws, and the rule of law.

11.2.2 Civics and Citizenship concepts and skills Studying Civics and Citizenship will allow you to develop key skills and values which shape responsible participation in Australia’s democracy. Through investigating issues and evaluating our institutions and systems, you will develop the ability to question the world in which you live. The four key skills in Civics and Citizenship are: • Investigating contemporary civics and citizenship issues • Evaluating democratic institutions and systems • Participating in civic processes • Communicating 11.2.3 Investigating contemporary Civics and Citizenship issues You will investigate the operation of Australian democracy, political and legal systems by asking questions. These questions will form the basis of your research into contemporary Australian society
