Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander elders help the magistrate understand cultural issues, the accused’s background and how crimes affect the community. Elders are respected in their community for their knowledge and lore . They show the accused that their actions are not accepted. The Victorian Koori Court and, especially, the Children’s Koori Court, help address issues that lead to offending. They recognise culture and have reduced reoffending rates. 13.6.4 Legal awareness The law affects everyone, so it is important to know your rights and responsibilities. You need to be aware of how to access justice and how to apply for legal representation. Schools teach civics and citizenship to help students understand the law. Reliable information is on websites like the Law Institute of Victoria and Victoria Legal Aid. Advertising is used to promote new laws to keep everyone informed. 13.6 SkillBuilder activity EVALUATING, CONCLUDING AND DECISION-MAKING, COMMUNICATING Work in groups of three or four. 1. Identify one factor that can improve access to justice and legal representation (e.g. robot lawyers). 2. Create a storyboard that: • explains this factor • outlines how it can improve access to justice and legal representation. 3. Produce a video presentation that will engage your audience (other Year 7 students). 4. Share your video with the rest of your class.
