1. No doubt you thought of money! What do you think are the best-paid occupations in Australia? 2. If you won the lottery tomorrow, would you still plan to go to work? Discuss your answer with a partner. 3. Write down the advantages and disadvantages of continuing to work if you won the lottery.

What is work?
The Australian Bureau of Statistics says a person is ‘employed’ if they work for at least one hour in a week. This includes everyone from teens with part-time jobs to adults with full-time jobs. To be ‘unemployed’, a person must not work at all, be looking for a job, and be ready to work. FIGURE2 shows the unemployment rate in Australia.
