LESSON 17.3 What types of work are there?

LEARNING INTENTION By the end of this lesson you should be able to: • identify the different categories of work, like full-time, part-time, casual and volunteer work • explain why people work and help their communities.

Tune in Study the two images in FIGURE1 , which show two very different types of work.

FIGURE1 Many different types of work exist.

1. Brainstorm what work each person might be doing. 2. Estimate the salary that each person might earn.

3. Discuss how the work the person on the left is doing might contribute to society. 4. Discuss how the work the person on the right is doing might contribute to society.

17.3.1 What counts as work? Work means doing mental and physical tasks for money. When you get paid, it’s called paid work, and the money you earn is called a wage or salary. But some work doesn’t earn money, like cleaning your room or doing chores at home. Even though your parents might give you pocket money for chores, it’s not considered income in economics. Other examples of unpaid work include family duties, schoolwork, volunteering and community service.
