The work available in an economy changes over time due to several factors: • Technological changes refer to advances in technology, the automating of tasks, and creation of new industries. This shifts the types of jobs available and the skills needed. • Outsourced labour is when businesses move jobs to countries with cheaper labour costs, reducing jobs in higher cost areas while creating opportunities in lower cost regions. • Communication changes refer to the rise of digital communication, which enables remote work and virtual collaboration, expanding global job opportunities and fostering the gig economy . • Casualisation of the workforce means that more workers take on temporary, part-time, or contract roles instead of permanent, full-time jobs, offering þexibility but less job security and beneýts

1. With the help of your teacher, discuss an appropriate person to interview about their working life. This should be someone with more than 30 years working experience. It can be a parent or caregiver, a grandparent, a guest speaker, or a recorded podcast or interview. 2. Prepare a list of questions, using the following as headings or guides: • Hours worked • Wages and conditions • Skills required • Job satisfaction • Career length • Changes to the workplace 3. Take notes or record the interview (with the interviewee’s permission), focusing on key insights from their responses. 4. Use the responses to prepare an answer to the following prompt: Discuss the signiýcant changes that have taken place in the workplace over the last 30 years.
