Since European settlement, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians have not had the same chances as others. Now, programs are helping them achieve their goals. Like all entrepreneurs, they look for opportunities and take risks. Many focus on businesses that help their communities and have found success in tourism, art, clothing and natural products. Tahnee Edwards is a proud Yorta Yorta and Taungurung woman. She started Gammin Threads as a side project while working at an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander family violence prevention service. Her

business celebrates language and pride, offering ‘chillwear’ and accessories. Through Gammin Threads, she empowers women and encourages living colourfully.

17.7.2 Community-run companies Social traders, proýt-for-purpose businesses and social enterprises all want to make the world better. They focus on social, environmental, cultural or economic causes. These businesses earn most of their money from sales and use at least half of their proýts to support their mission. Unlike charities, they don’t rely on donations.
