27. 1887 N172 Old Judge Cigarettes #43-2 Dan Brouthers (HOF) - SGC VG- EX 4

28. 1887 N172 Old Judge Cigarettes #78-3 John Clarkson (HOF) - PSA VG- EX 4

An exceptional quality image of Hall of Fame first baseman Dan Brouthers, one of the most popular players of his time and an image that is closely associated with the N172 Old Judge issue due to its use in the company’s advertising for the cards. A 328-game winner across 12 major league seasons, John Clarkson was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1963, an honor delayed for no apparent good reason. This pose, #78-3, can be found picturing Clarkson with either Chicago or Boston, who purchased him in April of 1888. This example identifies him with Boston. Graded VG-EX 4 by PSA, the card is sharp, with some toning darkening the overall image but the photo still clear and visible. Corners are sharp and the image well-centered on the canvas, with a clean reverse. A fine-looking specimen with above average image quality.

numerical grade does not effectively describe the card, which boasts outstanding image contrast and deep detail, far in excess of many cards from the issue. Square corners and clean borders are evident as well, some light foxing and staining on the reverse responsible for keeping the card from a higher holder. Advanced collectors concern themselves less with the technical grade in this issue, and far more with the quality of the image, which in this case is exemplary.
