57. 1911 T205 Honest Long Cut Ty Cobb (HOF) - PSA GOOD+ 2.5

59. 1921 E253 Oxford Confectionary Ty Cobb (HOF) - PSA GOOD 2

Considered by many to be the most beautiful of all prewar cards, the T205 Ty Cobb boasts an attractive portrait image, bathed in color with a rich, red background, a deep green frame, and, of course, the gold (in this case, gold/green) border. Graded GOOD+ 2.5 by PSA, this example does exhibit the kind of edge and corner wear to which T205s are susceptible; chipping to the gold foil borders is a commonly-seen flaw. In this case, print registration of Cobb’s image is ever-so-slightly off, another common issue with this

Among the difficult 20-card Oxford Confectionery set, Ty Cobb is one of the most important, and clearly among the most valuable cards in the issue. The set is a unique and interesting one, featuring 14 eventual Hall of Famers including Babe Ruth, Walter Johnson and Grover Alexander. Each of the set’s sepia- toned cards measure 1 5/8” x 2 1/4” and are generally fraught with condition issues. This example has been graded GOOD 2 by PSA due to overall wear that is clearly most notable at the corners. Some

particular card, though the registration is by no means distracting. The tougher Honest Long Cut reverse adds some scarcity to the card.

edge wear is evident in the form of slight chipping and age-related discoloration; surface wear consistent with the grade is also visible upon closer examination.

The “key” card of virtually every issue between 1907 and 1921 is that of Ty Cobb. Thought the 1921 E121 American Caramel issue also contains Babe Ruth cards that would qualify is the issue’s “keys,” the Cobb remains important, and it also is one of the Georgia Peach’s more popular cardboard issues, due to its relative affordability and his portrayal as the team’s manager. Presented here is an attractive example, exhibiting wear at the corners and edges, with a relatively clean image area, centered to the right. The reverse is clean. 58. 1921 E121-80 American Caramel Ty Cobb (HOF) - PSA VG 3 MINIMUM BID: $500

60. 1922 E121-120 American Caramel Ty Cobb (HOF - Batting) - PSA VG 3

Visually-pleasing card featuring the Georgia Peach with his patented split grip, from the 1922 E121 American Caramel Series of 120 series. Despite crediting Cobb in his new role as manager, the image makes no bones about the fact that Cobb remained primarily a hitter , as he would show the baseball world, batting .389 in a full season. The following season he would eclipse .400 for the third and last time in his career, though his average would never dip below .323 for the remainder in his career. Years later, Lefty O’Doul

was asked how he thought Cobb would fare against modern pitching. O’Doul replied that he felt Cobb would bat .260 or .270. When pressed on why the Hall of Famer’s average would be so low, O’Doul responded, “Well, you’ve got to understand, the man is 70 years old now.”
