65. 1926-29 Exhibits Postcard Back Babe Ruth (HOF - Follow Through, Blank Back) - PSA VG 3
67. 1934 Goudey #37 Lou Gehrig (HOF) - SG VG 3
The phrase “Yellow Gehrig” is one any prewar collector will recognize; it clearly refers to the iconic 1934 Goudey card featuring the bold portrait of a smiling Yankee captain set against a bright yellow background. The Gehrig-endorsed 1934 Goudey issue helped cement the first baseman as the game’s biggest star in the wake of a fading Babe Ruth; his wholesome image and impossible consecutive games streak endeared him to baseball fans not only in New York, but nationwide. The 1934 Goudey issue
Clearly a key to the 1926-29 Exhibits Postcard Back set, this card of Yankee slugger Babe Ruth depicts him at the end of his swing, following the trajectory of the ball with his eyes. This black and white card has been graded VG 3 by PSA, a generous grade given the wear and staining visible to the eye at the top and right edges. The image of Ruth is clear, despite the wear, the card a difficult one to find in any grade. In this particular example, the back is blank, a bit of an anomaly for the issue. A tremendous card from the prime of Ruth’s career, the most desirable subject in the hobby. MINIMUM BID: $1,500
remains one of the more popular of the gum card era, and without a Ruth it is the issue’s two Gehrig cards that are the set’s undisputed keys. The bright yellow background is susceptible to showing stains and scuffs, and this example is no exception, as the bottom-right corner does show some soiling. However, the card remains largely bright and the image clear and vivid, centered extremely well on the canvas. Corner wear is held to a minimum, perhaps VG/EX or better, with the aforementioned staining - perhaps more visible on the reverse - the primary condition flaw. One of the most visually appealing cards of the 1930s.
66. 1934 Exhibits 4-On-1 Ruth/ Gomez/Gehrig/Dickey (HOF) - PSA VG-EX 4
MINIMUM BID: $1,000
Due to the strength of the player selection alone, this 1934 Exhibit 4-on-1 card is extraordinary. Any card featuring Babe Ruth is, of course, in high demand in the hobby. Add Lou Gehrig, Lefty Gomez and Bill Dickey, however, and the result is an incredible assortment of Yankee greats all in one card. Graded VG-EX 4 by PSA, the card does display some minor wear, but certainly nothing to detract from the greatness of this amazing card. MINIMUM BID: $1,500
68. 1939 Play Ball #26 Joe DiMaggio (HOF) - BVG EX-MT+ 6.5
Known for sun-splashed images of its subjects, the 1939 Play Ball set marked the first of three issues from Gum, Inc., the predecessor of Bowman. This gorgeous DiMaggio is just low and left of center, otherwise it surely would have graded even higher than it already did by achieving an EX- MT+ 6.5 from BVG. This year’s cards are known for foxing, and while there is some very light foxing on the back, that does not impact the front in any way. The DiMaggio is one of the key cards
to the issue, which is rapidly growing in popularity.
