Love of the Game Auctions Spring, 2024 Premier Auction

A CURATED SELECTION OF GREAT CARDS

81. 1956 Topps #33 Roberto Clemente (Gray Back) - PSA NM+ 7.5

83. 1967 Topps #581 Tom Seaver (HOF RC) - PSA NM-MT 8

Tremendous card, a last-minute consignment to this auction rushed by us through PSA due to its outstanding eye appeal. This second- year card of Roberto Clemente is well-centered and sharp, with a clean image and very little visible wear. Light corner touches likely keep it from a higher holder, but the card is wonderful regardless, a high-grade example of a key Hall of Famer from one of Topps’ most prized sets.

One of the most important cards of its decade, the rookie card of superstar pitcher “Tom Terrific,” issued in advance of a rookie season where he would win 16 games against a 2.76 ERA with the hapless Mets, just two years prior to their miraculous World Championship. Seaver would win three Cy Young awards in New York before being traded to Cincinnati, ultimately winning 311 games in his career. Extremely sharp, centered just to the right of the canvas, a bright, colorful, and clean example of his rookie card.

84. 1975 Topps #223 Robin Yount (HOF RC) - PSA MINT 9

82. 1957 Topps #35 Frank Robinson (HOF RC) - SGC NM+ 7.5

The Topps quality control (or lack thereof) of its pre-1980s issues is legendary; collectors looking to assemble high-grade sets of virtually any season wrestle with any number of print flaws, each conspiring to reduce the technical grade of every card. Perhaps no set exemplifies this better than 1975. Centering issues battle miscuts, fish-eyes, print snow, roller lines and tilts for the most egregious flaws. Its rich, colorful borders add the propensity for edge chipping, similar to that experienced with the notoriously condition-

Apparently broken out of a time capsule from 1957, this Topps rookie card of Hall of Famer Frank Robinson sports a wonderful, bright andfresh look. This example is graded SGC 7.5 NM+ by PSA, and is centered a little to the right, but has strong corners. There is some snow and the side edges are a little fuzzy, but it has great, consistent borders. Robust reds and fabulous tertiary colors beckon and you can practically feel Robinson’s massive power about to be unleashed. The reverse has the same bright look as the

sensitive 1971 issue.

front, with centering to match. Robinson’s hitting prowess is well- documented, while his ground-breaking managerial career has left a lasting legacy.

Some extremely minor diamond cutting and a close-to but not- quite-perfect left edge are the only possible issues keeping this Robin Yount rookie card from grading even higher than the PSA MINT 9 it has achieved here. Overall, a tremendous card, along with the card of George Brett the most important baseball cards of the 1970s.
