Ceramics 1 is a gateway to a world of creative exploration and endless possibilities in clay! In this immersive course, students will discover the exciting range of clay- working techniques, from hand-building to wheel-throwing. As students shape and mold their ideas, they’ll explore the rich history of ceramic vessels and dive into inspiring modern movements like Pop, Funk, and Contemporary ceramics, which have redefined the medium in recent years. This course offers a broad introduction to clay-working methods, giving students the foundation to develop their skills further in Ceramics 2 or any other hands-on art course. Whether students are looking to create functional pieces or sculptural works that push the boundaries of the material, Ceramics 1 offers a welcoming space for their artistic growth and discovery.
This class is all about taking students' ceramic skills to the next level! Building on the techniques explored in Ceramics 1, students will master throwing more complex forms on the pottery wheel and combining hand- building methods to create innovative clay art. They’ll also explore exciting new techniques like slip casting, mold making, and advanced glazing to add depth and creativity to their pieces. In addition, students will research and recreate a historical work of pottery, gaining insight into the traditions and techniques of the past while putting their own creative spin on it. Sample projects include designing a sculptural teapot, creating vibrant ceramic wall murals, constructing slab-made architecture, and much more. This course is packed with creative opportunities that will inspire and challenge students to push the boundaries of their artistic expression.
