Mural Painting and Street Art Semester - 0.5 Credit Prerequisite: None

Independent Study in Photography Foundations Semester - 0.5 Credit Prerequisite: Instructor Approval

This one-of-a-kind introductory art class immerses students in the richly expressive disciplines of drawing, painting, and printmaking, laying a strong foundation for their creative journey. Students will dive into both historical and contemporary mural painting and street art, working alongside peers to design and paint a large-scale artwork. The course includes an inspiring field trip to the vibrant Wynwood Walls in Miami and gives students the chance to connect with muralists and street artists who are actively shaping the scene. Students will explore their own personal interests and social themes through abstract and representational works, bringing their unique visions to life. The semester will culminate in the creation of a bold, larger-than-life mural—painted either individually or as part of a team—that will be proudly displayed on campus.

This course is designed to introduce students to the essential techniques, history, and artistic aspects of photography. Students will engage in both group and solo projects to build their skills and understanding. A variety of photographic subjects and methods will be explored to help students gain a solid grasp of how to control and capture light. The main tool for these activities will be a digital camera. Students will also become familiar with editing techniques using Adobe software. This class also offers a brief overview of black-and-white film photography, including the fundamentals of developing and printing in a darkroom. Sample themes include video production, Claymation, architecture, and more. Under instructor guidance, and supported by both on and off campus resources, students will have the opportunity to build a body of artwork in their chosen discipline to support their college applications or other portfolio-based opportunities.
