Letter from the Executive Director
Dear Friends and Colleagues:
Much attention has been drawn to the resiliency of homes in light of the extreme weather we are increasingly experiencing. The continued growth of LEED for Homes is attributable to its many proven benefits, includ- ing enhanced property value, healthier indoor environments, and energy and water savings that average 20- 30 percent. Another benefit -espe- cially important during harsh winters like this one- is comfort. Comfort is a key attribute to homeowners, and LEED Homes are less drafty, have lower operating costs, and reduced noise. LEED-certified Homes are of- ten more resilient to extreme weather as well, as was experienced since

Super Storm Sandy. In January, the U.S. Green Building Council announced the 50,000th LEED-certified green housing unit. This is quite an accomplishment in the short time since the launch of the LEED for Homes rating system in 2007. Of the 50,000-plus certified units, 74 percent are within multifamily buildings, and an impressive 44 percent are classified as affordable housing. Illustrating the strength of this rising trend, nearly 65 percent of the total units were certified in the past two years. What’s more, there are over 82,000 units currently under construction and in the pipeline for LEED certification. In our MAREJ region, Delaware, Maryland and Virginia have a combined 2027 certified LEED for Homes units. Pennsylvania has 1270 certified units, and in New Jersey there are 2340 certified units.
