NOVEMBER 2024

A NOTE FROM SYLVIA Welcome to November! I hope this month finds you well and ready to enjoy the warmth and coziness of home, as well as the exhilarating, brisk air of late fall. Whether you are bundling up for local fall festivals, savoring seasonal flavors or preparing for holiday gatherings, this is a time to reflect, connect and enjoy all that this season brings. This month, TPT proudly celebrates Native American Heritage Month. We are dedicated to honoring and preserving the diverse stories of our region, and we are thrilled to highlight the significant contributions of Native American communities in Minnesota and beyond. In addition to national programming and local content, we will also rebroadcast “The Electric Indian” on November 4 at 8 pm, a powerful TPT film about the life and legacy of hockey star Henry Boucha. You can find more Native American culture and history content at TPT.org/NAHM. November also marks the significant culmination of the election season. After months of staying up-to-date on the news and watching the debates, you can always count on “Almanac” to offer trusted context on local and national events, and on “PBS News Hour” to deliver balanced coverage of the election. This year, “Almanac” is also celebrating its 40th anniversary as the longest-running public affairs program in Minnesota and an important pillar of civic engagement in our community. Premiering this month on TPT, Ken Burns' “Leonardo da Vinci” brings to life the extraordinary story of the 15th Century Italian polymath whose boundless creativity and intellect have left an indelible mark on history. The film premieres on November 18 at 7 pm, and the second part airs on November 19 at 7 pm. Rounding out the month, we will premiere a new history film from “Minnesota Experience.” On November 26 at 7 pm, the two-hour documentary “Broadcast Wars” examines the broadcast news business in the 1960s, 70s and 80s, as ratings battles caused fierce competitive clashes between local stations and forever changed the news industry in Minnesota and beyond. In this season of gratitude, I want to extend our heartfelt thanks for your continued support of TPT. As we look ahead to more inspiring programs, educational opportunities and greater community impact, we invite you to consider investing more deeply in TPT’s mission as 2024 comes to a close. Your support will ensure that TPT remains a vital resource for all.

Get to Know TPT’s Giving Team An inside look at how substantial financial contributions support and sustain our community-rooted mission.

How does someone get started if they’re interested in leaving a legacy at TPT, sharing their love for the organization with future generations?

At Twin Cities PBS, the support of our community powers programs and outreach services that inform, inspire and connect us all. TPT viewers, donors and volunteers play a pivotal role in sustaining the mission of public media for future generations. In this Q&A, the Giving Team shares how your contributions make an impact, the ways we engage with supporters and how planning for the future today helps to preserve public media for tomorrow.

It’s as easy as A, B, C...D.

A Ask questions and learn about estate planning by doing your research. Check out “Estate Planning 101” from Next Avenue (nextavenue. org), our digital journalism site for older adults navigating the next phases of their lives. B Contact the Giving Team. We can discuss planned giving options such as wills, trusts, charitable gift annuities or retirement accounts. Many options allow you the ability to leave a legacy while offering tax benefits for you and your heirs. We’ll also discuss aligning your values with TPT’s mission for the legacy you envision. C Collaborate with an estate attorney or financial advisor to discern what options are right for you—such as bequests, beneficiary designations or charitable trusts. Share TPT’s legal name, tax ID and address for your legal documents. D Make sure to inform the Giving Team of your plans. Sharing your intentions now saves the team time and ensures that all details are properly documented, your intentions are understood and we can recognize your commitment. Can you share an example of how a major gift or a planned gift has made a difference in the community we serve? One great example is the generosity of TPT donors interested in history, who have then chosen to support that work with gifts focused on “Minnesota Experience” programming.

"The Giving Team" is frequently mentioned on-air and in the TPT magazine. What does your team do?

The Giving Team works with community members who would like to support the station with charitable gifts. These contributions may be given today, given over time or arranged as part of their estate. Contributions of all amounts are vital to ensure that TPT is able to bring dynamic and insightful programming to our communities. What is the difference between a major gift and a planned gift, and how do these contributions make a difference at TPT? A major gift is given today, while planned gifts are given in the future. In working with donors to give to TPT and the programs they love, our team helps provide the financial resources that fund the daily work of the station, carry out large-scale initiatives, fund special projects and sustain long-term programs. We really mean it when we say we could not do this work without donors like you. Those who make a planned gift support our work with future funding, ensuring our financial sustainability and continued mission-driven work.

NOVEMBER 2024

This donor funding has allowed the History Team to uplift untold stories, including “Jim Crow of the North,” which continues to engage communities in healing conversations, inspire local involvement in discharging racial covenants and has even influenced career paths. Five years later, the program’s impact continues, with 4.5 million YouTube views, and has become a key component in classroom and civics education across the U.S.

The giving process starts with conversation—we want to understand the donor’s passions, interests and experiences to find the right "match" within the work of public television. Our goal is to meet both the donor’s priorities and the financial needs of TPT. Are there tax benefits for those who contribute through planned giving, and how can donors learn more about those opportunities? Absolutely! Every donor has a unique set of circumstances and priorities. The Giving Team is happy to share details about the many giving opportunities within TPT. We also encourage donors to speak to their legal and financial advisors for guidance. As we look ahead to the future, what are the Giving Team’s highest priorities and goals for securing the support needed to ensure that the work of TPT continues for generations to come? At TPT, we constantly reflect on the rapidly changing needs of our community, and to do so, we rely upon continuing partnership with our community of donors. The TPT endowment (an organization’s savings account) provides dependable funding— even during economic uncertainty—and donors may align their major or planned gift to our endowment fund and program areas within. Significant giving is also vital to sustain our daily operations, allowing our content teams to strengthen the connection with our communities, our technical teams to leverage the latest innovations in production and distribution, and the station as a whole to garner the best talent in the industry.

Our educational programming has also grown thanks to donor support. TPT has leveraged donor giving to expand our community outreach efforts and meet families where they are. Our summertime library partnership has grown from 4 partner sites in 2022 to 18 this year. TPT’s Center for Lifelong Learning works with libraries to host free STEM learning events featuring hands-on activities and popular PBS Kids characters. What motivates donors to give a major or planned gift, and how do you work with them to align their interests with the organization’s goals? People contribute for many reasons. They may feel a personal connection to TPT’s mission and programs, a desire to make a lasting impact, trust in TPT, recognition, and tax or financial planning benefits.

We would love to discuss with you how your gift can support the TPT programs and services you care about for years to come. Contact the Giving Team at giving@tpt.org or 651-229-1410.

NEXT AVENUE SPECIAL SECTION

Canoeing Minnesota’s Boundary Waters With Three Generations By Jim Umhoefer

Back when my camping clothes fit more loosely, I measured the success of an outing in Minnesota's Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) by the distance covered. The more miles paddled in a day somehow added to the value of the trip. That was pre-kid and grandkid thinking. Canoeing with family and friends in the BWCAW is about quality, not quantity, my wife reminded me before I shoved off on a five-day, four-night adventure with one grandpa, three dads and five young men.

"You're there to enjoy yourselves, Jim, not to see how far you can go."

When the kids were hungry, we fired up our gas stove for a first-night meal of chicken, peas and potatoes. We devised teams for kitchen patrol duty for the duration of the trip. This meant when each team's turn came, it cooked and cleaned up for all of one day's meals. In the end, time was the essence of our wilderness jaunt — time made for family, friends and fun in a place where time didn't matter. As it turned out, the miles covered didn't matter either. When the kids asked if we could do this again some other time, I knew that was what mattered most.

My wife said: "You're there to enjoy yourselves, Jim, not to see how far you can go. If that means staying in one site for a couple of days to let the kids play in the lake, then that is more important than covering a set distance." We pushed off on our adventure of discovery in three canoes. We rotated paddlers so everyone had a chance to lounge like a lizard amid the gear in the middle of the canoe. Usually, it didn't matter that a couple of our canoes zigzagged across a lake, powered by inexperienced paddlers. When the sky threatened or the wind howled, we made haste to a nearby shore. After a first-day storm faded, the broad sky over Pipestone Bay opened into a vault of warm blue. We selected a shady, spacious campsite under the pines by 2 p.m. By getting an early paddling start, we reasoned, we'd get the pick of campsites by early afternoon.

Van Life Vanguard By Clayton Trutor

When COVID pandemic precautions led people to hunker down indoors, the hashtag #VanLife became a fixture on social media. Videos of people traveling the country or settling in new communities while living in vans, RVs or repurposed school buses were emblematic of the unconventional spirit of the times. A number of these "Van Lifers" became YouTube or Instagram celebrities in the early 2020s and continue to cultivate large followings. Some are instructional while others were intended primarily to entertain. Many of the best known Van Lifers are in their 20s and 30s, work remotely thanks to the global broadband coverage provided by the satellite telecom service Starlink and have built out their vans with sleek furnishings.

The Census Bureau estimates that, as of 2019, the latest complete data available, roughly 140,000 Americans lived in vans — some of whom were “nomads” who traveled from place to place and some of whom stayed in a particular community. Facebook has Van Life groups with active memberships numbering in the tens of thousands, many of whom are aged 50 or over. They come from across the country and have a range of life experiences. Many seem to be drawn to the Southwestern U.S. and its warm climate. Some remain in their hometown but simply reside in a van. "With one person, a van is ideal. You have everything you need with you all the time," said Chuck Jacobs, a part-time van dweller. "In a van, you can change your plans on the fly. The van makes for a more efficient use of space." Jacobs, 75, operates a popular and eclectic YouTube channel where he documents his adventures. His videos are conversational and his experience as a community college teacher come through in his thoughtful yet casual presentation of ideas. Jacobs has been exploring the West in vans, RVs, campers and Jeeps for his entire adult life. In 1968, he bought his first van, a 1953 International Metro Star, while serving in the Army in Oklahoma. Currently, he travels in a 1991 Ford E-250 Club Wagon.
