Team-building Review Topical

❖ Purpose: To introduce a sense of teamwork into role plays.

❖ Time Required: 10 to 20 minutes.

❖ Size of Group: 10 to 18.

❖ Materials Required: None.

❖ The Exercise in Action: A different twist on role plays is guaranteed to keep participants attentive and build a team atmosphere, according to Shirley Poertner, staff consultant for training and development, Meredith Corp. Rather than using traditional role plays for senior-level managers, Poertner uses a “tag team” approach. She divides the managers into two groups of five participants each. Group A members are all given the first half of a role play to read, and Group B members are given the other half of the same role play. One manager from each group sits at a desk or table and begins the role play, with the other four managers from each group lined up behind that person. At any point, the manager from either team in the role play can reach behind and touch or “tag” any of the other managers who are standing behind them. At that point, the tagged team member steps forward and continues the role play. Poertner says the exercise is effective because all participants need to stay attentive so that they’re prepared to jump in. A variation on this is for the waiting team members to take the initiative in tagging their way into the role play.
