Team-building Review Topical: Orientation
❖ Purpose: To help new employees develop friendships and learn about each other during orientation training. ❖ Time Required: About 15 to 20 minutes at the beginning and end of each orientation session.
❖ Size of Group: 5 to 10.
❖ Materials Required: None.
❖ The Exercise in Action: Heidi Mattson, an education specialist at the University of Wisconsin Credit Union in Madison, WI, uses a variation of the “share something about yourself” technique she calls “Story Time.” At the beginning and end of each 8-hour training day, Mattson presents a new topic to the class and asks each participant to share a related short personal story with the class. Possible topics: best weather story (tornado, hurricane, blizzard), most embarrassing moment, worst haircut, pet/animal story, worst/best date, ugliest childhood outfit that your mother made you wear, or a story about running into someone in an unexpected place. To keep the exercise fresh after a few days, she asks participants to tell either a true story or a lie and encourages the others to guess which it is.
